Bose are fine for what they are; unobtrusive, decent sounding, lifestyle speakers and there's a huge market for them. However, audiophiles are prepared to buy ugly in pursuit of the holy grail, and it does make a huge difference to the trained ear. I personally, would never consider a Bose system as that lifestyle element is not what rocks my boat, I prefer some big f**koff floorstanders and a rack of equipment and loads of cables, to some teeny, subtle half-baked system anyday. Otherwise iPod/Bose/Squeezebox/Sonos etc for 80% fulfilment musically.
In short, Bose is perfect for those for whom music reproduction isn't a religion. Just like Tesco Finest - it's fine but there's so much better stuff around.
Mind you I popped into Morrissons in Wood Green the other day, and I'll tell you what I won't be going there again - 8 'value' chicken wings for 97p. Euch...
