sorry for revisting this as i'm sure its been mentioned before.a while ago my mrs bought me a panasonic bluray player (bd35 i think) now i realise im only getting half the pleasure without the hd sound so i will need an amp.now price is a big consideration so I thought of the new onkyo 307 for £250 would be a good start I know the 307 wont decode hd audio but the bd35 will do that job.is this a good option or should i spend more and get hd capable amp. your advice would be very welcome

The 307 won't accept audio via its HDMI socket - you need to ensure any amp you get can at least accept multichannel PCM via its HDMI to work with your Panny. The Onkyo 507 would be a better bet, or you could try and find a Sony STR-DG820.

The 307 doesn't have the multichannel analogue inputs you'd need to make the most of your player's internal decoding.

In the Onkyo range you'll need the 576, 606 or 607 to achieve what you want to do.

The 507 will accept LPCM over HDMI. The 820 is available in limited numbers at Richer Sounds, if you're quick. The new model from Sony will be out soon. Alternatively forget HD audio and pickup a higher end second hand amp that will destroy the budget stuff, lossless or not!

farawaydave:ok,so the 307 is out.maybe the 507 or another entry level amp.(think the sony 820 is all but finnished).any ideas anybody?

Get the TX-SR605, which is a better amp anyday to the new mid-range amps from Onkyo. 5 available on E-Bay at time of writing.
