I've been looking at the possibility of using one of these new Bluetooth DACS to stream audio from my laptop to my amp. I've been looking at the Crystal Acoustics BluDac and also the Arcam miniBlink as a means to an end, decent quality (apparently) that doesn't cost the earth.

However, does this AptX Bluetooth technology support the streaming of FLAC and WAVE files? I can't seem to find out the answer, so before I contact the manufacturers direct I though I'd ask on here first to see if anyone is familiar with either of these products.

You need to bear in mind that you will need an apt-x capable bluetooth transmitter from your laptop if it doesn't already come so equipped. I have used a Chordette Gem DAC and transmitted FLAC, WAV, MP3 etc. - they will be downmixed I believe to max. 44kHz / 16 bit resolution.

So not a basic USB Bluetooth dongle then?

A USB dongle will work so long as it is apt-x. Creative make one:

Thanks for that link.

The reviews I've read of both the Crystal Acoustics and Arcam miniBlink seem very positive, but the CA one is £30 less, so that could pay for that dongle!

You need both... the transmitter (USB apt-x dongle) and the receiver (apt-x DAC)

Now I'm confused, sorry! Why do I need both?

If I had either the Crystal Acoustics or Arcam miniBlink receivers, I thought I would just need a suitable AptX Bluetooth transmitter (like the Creative one you linked to) to plug into my laptop, or am I missing something here?
