Blu-ray player conundrum

So it looks like the New year sales have finally pushed me into relegating my trusted Sony BDP 550 from it's pole position in the lounge and me being in the market for an upgrade. The recent Savvy shopper article in the mag from another reader with the same player and tv set up helped me make the decision to change

So please can somebody give me guidance on my current thoughts.

I don't want 3d capability just the best overall sound and picture reproduction.I also don't really need to use the Blu ray for music playback but would prefer the new player to excel in this area if possible!

With the current discounts available which of the below would be best suited for me

Sony bdp 5000es @ 599

Pio bdp lx91 @ 1000

Pio bdp lx 52 @ 249

Marantz 7004 @700

Lastly the current award winner Cambridge Audio 650 @400

Any advice would be appreciated prior to all the sales items being snapped up!

Pioneer 91 £1000, can i ask where?

Cheers

As for the list as for as i am aware the Sony 5000es has the best image, sound probably the 91 Pioneer but i have not heard it to confirm that.

Hi Gel

Trusty Ebay...

Thanks for your quick response

I have to admit i have seen the 91 for as low as £900 but that deal has now long gone. I personally would definitely go for the Sony or the Pioneer, either way you are going to have a great blu ray player.

I take it gel that pound for pound the Sevenoaks deal on the Pio 52 is not in the running?

£900 for the 91! jeez!! (Seasonal pun intended) where was that from if you don't mind and how long ago....

Your present Sony is an excellent player. To be honest, I'd save my money and use it for a more effective upgrade. Any differences will be marginal and you may find loading times worsen. Of course, you could add streaming capability (iPlayer, LoveFilm etc) by opting for a BDP-S370, currently available at a bargain price! On the other hand, the Cambridge would add excellent playback of CD/SACD/DVD-Audio etc

Cheers Sorreltiger....Hmmm a more effective upgrade?? Marantz 8004? that blows the budget! I'm afraid to say..

Nope not in the slightest the 52, the Big Sony and 91 Pioneer a completely different league - picture and sound.

Yep and that was a shop and on the internet but my lips are sealed

Sorry - I was stupid enough to forget that your Sony receiver needs a player with analogue outs, so that rules out the BDP-S370! I must admit, I'm a bit of a cynic regarding the cost-effectiveness of expensive blu-ray players, but I did nearly buy the Cambridge for its ability with CD.

I think you're going to have to do some auditioning really to judge whether the outlay will be worth it for you. Of course, you could save up for other system upgrades (speakers?) 🙂

I had the 550 for 18 months then bought the BDPs370 for blew it out of the water. Way better in every way...

I reckon if the bdp 5000es is the improvement on the 370 that the price suggests then it must be awesome. However, that's just an uneducated opinion - I've not heard / seen any of the players you mention.

Ex demo LX91 for £895 here .

I would however put the afore mentioned OPPO 93EU at the top of any Blu-ray list at the moment for anything under 1.5K
