Blu Ray DVD connection to a standard non HD AV Amp, what is best for maximum Audio Performance - 6.1ch, Digital or Optical??

HDMI, assuming the AV amp has HDMI inputs.

Hi Andi,

The Amp is one of the older Yamaha RX range and is not HD compatible.
For some reason the main body of my thread would not display!!

Thanks

I'd use a digital coax cable. transfer is generally more reliable than an optical for home cinema applications, as the cables are usually curled up and squeezed behind your equipment rack causing data loss and making the sound a bit thin in optical cables. Ive tried both and my preference is definitely with coaxial. Bear in mind with digital cables you dont have to spend the earth as I find there is very little variation in sound between similarly priced cables of relatively short lengths. I use QED's Performance Coaxial cable (£30) in my mid range setup and it sounds great.

You said this is a NON HD AV amp. I am therefore assuming it does not have HDMI inputs. If this is not the case, then of course HDMI is a better option - try QED's Qunex range.

If you want to make the most of the HD sound formats, using the analogue connection will do the trick on second thoughts

Thanks Lewis.

Am I right in assuming that using the analogue outputs as a stand alone audio output will cover all Blu Ray media, or would I have to use both analogue and digital to cover all bases?
