I am looking into buying my first blu-ray player and have a few questions...

1. Can a blu-ray disk/player output DTS/DD (old format)?

2. Is there much difference between DTS/DD and DTS HD/DD HD?...therefore is it worth buying a blu-ray player with decoder.

I am looking at either...

Panasonic DMP-BD35, Sony BDPS350/BDPS550

Not sure if I can afford the Panasonic DMP-BD55

Are there any other options?

Other options - PS3, just ordered mine last night off amazon. I hope it lives up to the hype!

Yes.

In my opinion, yes. But do you have an amplifier which is able to accept and decode the HD signal? This could be a crucial factor on which Blu-Ray player you choose.

Yes...my Amp has 5.1 external decode input...I can't justify replacing my amp, I know its around 9yrs old and there are some much better amps out there but for £400+ money...I will wait for it to go wrong.

I have ruled out a PS3, because I have a XBOX360, and a dedicated blu-ray player should be better than a PS3 and will likely have a decoder options, which the PS3 does not have. If I got a PS3, I would need to replace the amp to get DTS/DD HD...not sure if the PS3 have all the HD audio codec supported.

Panasonic DMP-BD35 (£190ish), Sony BDPS350 (£160ish)...good prices but no decoder..hence the question above

Sony BDPS550 (£210ish), good price for the decoder, not sure if the Panasonic DMP-BD55 (£340ish) is worth an extra £130.

I think I am drawn to the Sony BDPS550 because of the decoder and price... Has anyone found the Panasonic DMP-BD55 for less than £340?

If you're keeping your amplifier for the time being and want hd sound formats you need a blu ray player with multichannel analogue outs. The Sony 550 has them but not the Pana 35 nor the Sony 350

Absolutely. As to whether the Panny 55 is worth the extra over the Sony 550, WHF obviously think so as both got 5 stars at their respective prices (if the Panny didn't offer the value over the Sony, it wouldn't have got 5 stars). It also won Product of the Year for 2008 Blu-Ray players...
However, the only way to tell whether it's worth the extra for you is to go and have a look at both.

I've said this before on here but I am more impressed with the increase in audio than of the picture - you kind of expect raw 1080p is going to look brilliant but the sound is astonishing. PCM and DTS HD Master audio especially.
