why am i getting the horizontal black bars on certain freeview channels and certain blueray/dvd films on my pana 37px80 with pana bd 30 bluray. Bit concerned with image retention and all that.

If you mean black bars at top and bottom,then thats what happens on auto aspect depending on what you are watching and how it presents itself.If you do not like it,change it to zoom 1.It should not cause a problem if you do have it with black bars.
