You guys might have covered this issue on numerous occassion but here we go... If I Bitstream the Audio from say Sony BDPS350 Blu Ray player via Optical link through my old Av receiver will I be getting the new Dolby True HD/ DTS-HD etc, even though it wont name it on the Amp screen details.

i dont think optical carries that much data. Could be wrong but when i tried it on my bd35 it was only coming up with dts and then when i put it through hdmi it sadi tru hd etc. In order to get HD sound with an old amp i think you have to decode it in the player, which i dont think you can do with the s350??

Does optical carry HDCP? I didn't think it did and that is going to be your stumbling point I would have thought. I know HDMI does and some DVI connections do but I'm not sure on optical. Without HDCP authentification, your player will refuse to supply HD sound.

no, optical will only carry 5.1 dd. to get hd sound on an old amp you need a bdp that can decode the formats on-board and output via multi-channel analogue outs
