Better stereo SQ for digital inputs - AVR or stereo amp & DAC?

Heya,

I'm looking for a new amp, which will be used in a stereo (either 2.0 or 2.1) setup to playback music (CD and iPod), Xbox and BluRay with the occasional bit of TV. Initially thought my only option to get all those digital inputs would be to use an AV receiver, but now wondering if I could use a stereo amp plus DAC to get a better sound quality...

For example, Marantz PM6004 plus Arcam rDAC is just a shade over £600...which is in the same sort of territory as the Pioneer VSX-LX55 or Onkyo TXNR616.

So really the question is, for the given Marantz/Arcam pair mentioned above, how much would I have to spend on an AVR to get near the same sound quality?

The way I figure it, if I go the stereo amp + DAC route, I'll get better SQ for any given £££ but lose flexibility of inputs and quality of decoding from surround sound sources too.

PS This is to use with my existing Monitor Audio Silver RX2's.
