A rega P3 (in my case a P-3 24) then send it to Inspire for their upgrade package. Sublime! Approx £1k but probably worth twice that much?

Michell Gyro SE with arm. A Gyro SE with tecno was recently on the 'Bay for £1,095 and didn't sell, so I suspect you could get it for £1k. Even with an RB250 it would be my choice up to a grand.

Or you could get two of the first one chebby. I can see you as a master of the decks.

I'd go for one of the SL-1210M5G decks for £699 and a £50 Origin Live Rega arm board leaving £250 for a Rega RB250 and a decent cart.

Hi-fi and shiny, with cool blue LED lights to make it a bit of a show.

I agree with John.

And Gyrodecs don't need LED's to look cool 8)

Indeed, a cupboard or a curtain will do

+1

I would aim to pick up a second hand Regar Planar 2 or 3 for about £150 on eBay. With the full Quest package from Inspire you'll still have about £300 left to spend on vinyl.

Leave it a week or two and they'll be another range of interesting tt's to choose from.

Go on, place it in some water, lift the arm to about 45 degrees, lower the lights, light a cigarette lighter (flame set to maximum) and hide it behind one of the feet ...

...it's a North Sea oil platform.

Both involve the black gold ! :)

I had this to consider just over a year ago.

Looked at Clearaudio, but most UK dealers didn't actually have any. Looked at Pro-ject, but most seemed to have them to keep the shelves full, and no-one admitted to really liking them. Looked at Rega but they were in the middle of launching new models and I was put off by the huge main bearing nut visible when seated which just looked crude. Wondered about resurrecting my old Linn, but thought I might easily blow double the budget with so many changed parts. Wondered about Inspire mods but thought no going back.

Ended up with the basic Michell (see sig), which was even more of a bargain because I got the shop model complete with (cheap) cartridge. Plenty of money too for s/h Rega Fono mini preamp, and expensive interconnect (thanks to a magazine sub). Spent the rest on LPs and another cartridge I've not even tried yet. A lovely piece of engineering and remarkably good sound. Looks nice too.
