If I change my system (ie CD player, amps) and had £2K to spend either on new or 2nd hand components, what would anyone recommend for listening to thrash/ metal/death metal /melodic death metal?

Thanks

I recommend that you change your music

joke.

There are a few rockers on her that will help you out Jane, I am sure.

Technically speaking, the most accurate system is the one that should suit any type of music. But as we all know, we're all different. Accuracy may be the name of the game, but many people would forfeit a certain amount of accuracy for listenability. Accuracy doesn't necessarily guarantee the end result is all that listenable with certain types of music.

What sort of sound do you like? Are you after an aggressive sounding system to suit the mood of the music you listen to? What size is your room? Do you listen to this music loud?

I think it means that while your dying, at least your enjoying some nice music

One of the best speakers for rock/metal I have ever heard were Klipsch, but that have alot to do with the horntweeters I guess.

A local dealer once told me that NAD and Dali are a great combination when listening to rock or metal.
Anyway, I think you'll need a powerfull amp to keep the bass tight and acurate.

Yeah i have bad taste in music i know! Doesn't seem to be a fad i'm going through unfortunately!

anyway, i like the sound of my music to have quite alot of bass rather than tinny. I have a primare system which sounds quite good when played loud, but I would really like a system which i can listen to at a quieter volume and it still sound as detailed. Room is about 13" by 11" at a guess.

any ideas?

Ha, you're all laughing at my taste in music. Very funny. Suppose 'melodic death metal' does sound funny. I think it's called that cos they sing abouth death, dying and hell, all the time. Very predictable lyrics!!

i have b+w 684 speakers now which i am happy with, i think they're ace.

not so sure the primare is the best ever though despite all the ranting they did about it....

maybe i expect too much.

Try Monitor Audio's RX 6's with a Rotel RA1520. The speakers are a little on the smooth side, but the Rotel amplifier perks them up a bit with it's lively nature. To get a decent bass, even at low volume, you will need a larger speaker. Standmount speakers may have decent bass when they're played loud, but turn them to low volumes and it all but disappears - unless you want to pay big money of course!

Yes, yes...and yes.

At £2K it will be almost impossible to find a system that will do it all (sadly). Heavy metal NEED to be play at high volume, the pace is needed more than soundstage and imaging. Dynamic rather than tonal Accuracy (due to the typical recording of this type of music), the slightly forward sounding speakers with the biggest bass drivers will add impact and excitement too. Think Exposure, Naim, Densen for electronics. Speakers wise I would try to get a pair of big drivers PMC standmount (can't remember the model now, were they AB1?) ,Dynaudio Contour 1.8 mk2, Triangles Antal ES.

MY ASTINTREW AMP , LEEMA CD AND ATC SC11s handle rock music well i listen to YES,GARY MOORE, AMONGST OTHERS AND ALL SOUND GREAT

Andrew Everard:'Melodic death metal' is possibly the most hilarious music category title I have ever heard.

Isn't that oxymoronic? It's a new one on me. No offence intended.

I'm just struggling to imagine it. It sounds like being strapped to an iron maiden while receiving a relaxing foot massage.

Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath) is a

Mate you don't have to apologize for your taste in music........ever......listen to whatever you want when you want, as loud or as quite as you want too.............................

anyway my advice would be The Roksan Kandy K2...£895......... Roksan Kandy K2 Cd player.£899

Dali 2.8suite floorstanders £ 399 bonkers deal from sevenoaks.

this might give you what you want

good luck

I have heard Roksan with bands such as System of a down.......Rage.....Infected Mushroom.....Metallica.........

sounded absolutly blistering........

J.A.N.E. I listen to Morbid Angel Cannibal Corpse to Megadeth Slayer Metallica Tool and of course instrumental and Tori Amos. What I have found is........if you enjoy the precise timing and kick go with something like Cyrus and a montior audio speaker if you looking for something deeper maybe in the Arcam area and dali. Of course there is no right or wrong answer, but I do love my Proac and any system you pick will suit any line of these speakers. One thing I would have you look at price pending is cardas cables, they made a big difference in sound from other cables i used in the past.

Theres my answer cyrus and proac set up with some cardas cables, find them used for best value and look in the North America market Im sure you will find a better deal. For some reason Cardas is really expensive over seas but in NA there reasonable when looking used. enjoy....think cyrus proac....

I agree with Mike. You need to decide whether you want BASS or bass. Do you want thundering deep but muddied bass or detailed and melodic. If you want BASS, you could look at a sub woofer to go with your system.

I cannot say about specifics as others have more knowledge than me, but one point not picked up yet is your system layout. Experiment with your speaker positioning and where you sit relative to them. Speakers close to a wall can help to create a fatter bass sound. You should also look at how your speakers and stands if applicable are secured. I screwed philps screws through the carpet and then put the speaker spikes onto the screws. You can alternatively use a plynth and granite or paving slabs are used. If applicable blue tac your speakers to the stand. You want the speaker to be as solid as possible to cope with the vibrations caused by bass.

PS, this is a great site for ideas and info on death metal and other such genres.....
