Hi all,

I've been trying to get better quality music via my ps3 for a while now and currently i use an external hdd to store my music in WAV as it sounds better than mp3 but that has started me thinking that even better quality music MUST be possible with the PS3. I have looked at exact copy but as i understand it the ps3 won't recognise it? So i presume you then need to convert it to a format the ps3 will recognise?? I've looked at FLAC but don't really understand it as i'm a complete newbie at music compression and all the different formats so i would really appreciate some advice on upping the quality of my music.

I should add that ideally i would like to just need to use my PS3 to play my mucic and not need to have my laptop on in order to listen to music but i'm open to any ideas, if i HAVE to use my laptop i will but i'm not keen on the idea.

Thankyou very much

Hi

Somebody may come along and correct me but i pretty much thought that lossless WAV was an exact copy of the music. I have a similar setup to you, i have a PS3 and an external HD with all my music on lossless WAV's. I feed this to a DACMagic which is connected to my Cyrus 8vs2. I'm still in the early days of testing at the moment and have heard the DACMagic may take a little time to run in (if you believe that sort of thing). I would have thought that this would sound better than windows laptop with k mixer settings etc but i may be wrong.

Are you using an external DAC or digital out to a receiver?

Thanks

Frank

I use the ps3 media server to go from PC to ps3 & then from ps3 into amp. I have found that the best files by far have been FLAC files (for me anyhow) However most music is mp3 etc, after listening to a flac album then going to mp3 quality it can put me off unless its a really good tune! I use Media monkey on my PC & it shows the kbps of the track & my flac albums are 700 - 1200kbps as apposed to mp3 upto 320kbps....., huge difference & a big difference in sound. Thats what i have found!

WAV's are 1411kbps and a set bitrate, no variable. I have tested various formats and found WAV's to be the best sounding.

Hi Frank,

I was also of the opinion that WAV was an exact copy but i've read (perhaps too much as i'm very confused lol) that it's not the best way to copy music due to things like EAC making a more precise copy and checking alot more for errors etc but as i said before the whole subject is confusing me. Basically i just want to get the most out of my system and from the opinions in this forum perhaps i'm looking in the wrong place to improve my music??? I've never thought of DAC's etc as a starting point before and just thought a better format may pay dividends but i'm totally open to any suggestions to get better quality music.

Please bear with me here as i have very limited knowledge of DAC's except for their function, currently i have my external hdd connected to the ps3 with the ps3 connected to my amp via HDMI so i presume in this instance that the ps3 is being used as the DAC? I may be totally wrong in that assumption however but if that's the case i'm wondering if the ps3 is good enough for the job?

Thank you very much for your reply!

Do be mindful if its important to you that WAVs are'nt easilt tag-able, and FLAC and Apple Lossless files are, plus they should sound the same.

* But I'm no expert on what can and cant be used with a PS3. You seem to have used FLAC and i didnt think that was possible.

True, i already had all my music in WAV format anyway. For me they just appear as folders but i don't mind. I have also ripped all mine onto the PS3 using the ATRAC compression which is variable and goes up to 356k i believe. I think this sounds very good to be honest but i can hear a slight difference/improvement when listening to WAV's. I think it depends on how fussy you are with the quality and possibly what DAC and amp you use etc. Hope this helps.

That'll be streamed from a PC via some sort of Media Server client i.e. by the time the PS3 receives it, it will be in WAV format. To run directly from the PS3's hard drive (or an attached USB drive) WAV is the only lossless format it will play.

All original albums most have WAV format files which are high quality IMO too.
