Having read a small write up in one of the hifi mags about 'the most talked about speaker at the show', I thought I'd do a little more reading/watching about ELAC's new Debut range, in particular the B5 and B6 stand mounts.

Rather plain looking the money has gone into the driver engineering, cross over quality and simple but solid cabinet construction. The woofer's feature oversized vented magnets, 1.5inch voice coils and high tech diaphragms. The silk dome tweeter has a deep waveguide, not to dissimilar to those used by triangle and some extend amphion which sits the tweeter almost level with the woofer. I guess it is almost horn loaded.

Sensitivity is a low quoted 85db/w/m ... probably closer to 82db in real rooms/listening but I found it refreshing that Elac has deliberately decided to not make the speaker over sensitive, instead opting for better bass. This puts this little speaker in line with far more costly quality mini monitors and is a departure from 'high' sensitivity budget boxes voiced to go loud quickly.

Kind of puts it at a disadvantage though if used with price comparative entry stuff amplifiers. I suppose these ELACS are better used with decent amplification.

There are quite a few youtube videos on those and everything I've seen says pure quality.

I have not listened to much new hifi gear in the last few years, especially not cheap speakers but my favorite cheapy is Usher's S520.

Wonder how these fare in comparison but I'd hazard a guess the B5/B6 will compete at far higher levels than their ridicilously low prices suggests ... ?

Nice write up and I always rated Elac speakers.

Still no got my head around why you'd create a budget speaker that obviously needs an amp I a much higher price bracket to do it real justice. I have a nasty feeling they are not going to sell like hot cakes.

There is a whole saga with Andrew Jones' speakers divided in 3 reviews on this site. Should give you a good chuckle, especially about the grills. *mosking*

Good link, thanks Vlad.

Reading that particular review, I am not so sure I would like the B5's frequency response. How much the room had to with this ... dunno.

Also, the cabinet seems somewhat flimsy.

Perhaps Quad's 11L, although a full hundred quid more expensive, is a better bet if accuracy is important.

They measure superbly.

Then there are Usher's S520 ...

With you on the Ushers that I almost bought and the 11L's of which I own two pairs.

Have you read about these mods? ...

It seems they made no difference whatsoever. The only true difference he got was by using a sub to bypass the obvious limitations of a 2-way going so low in frequency.

I want a 5.1 setup with those cute Ushers. I'll need a blue colored sub to complete a Mondrian theme.

I'm not sure if they look more like ProAcs or Neats. But I love the form factor.
