I'm looking to replace my ageing DVD player with a BD player, which I will want to use for CDs as well, so seeking recommendations.

It needs to have a display (track number, elapsed time) so that I don't need the TV on, be reasonably quick to respond to the controls, and sound good of course. I'll be using the digital output into a Yamaha R-N301 receiver. Budget up to about £150.

For a decent sounding Blu-Ray player, you need to be looking at the likes of the Pioneer BDP-LX58 or Oppo 103D, both of which are well above your budget. Players from the likes of Sony and Panasonic around the £150 mark will most likely have similar tonal qualities. Your best option may be to have a listen to a few different brands in store, pick the one you like the best and fits in with the rest of your system, and then in the future add a DAC to further improve the sound. The DAC will also enable other sources to be connected to your system and benefit from an improved sound.

If you are using Digital out, then the sound quality will be determined by your Yamaha, not the BD Player. (This applies whether it costs £50 or £5000)

All you need is a BD Player that has the features you need, however I would steer clear of the cheaper ones as their upscaling of DVDs is usually inferior. (BD quality is virtually the same with any player over about £50)

Try the Pioneer BDP 450 as it will also play multiple disc formats, however it does have limited smart features.

Hope this helps

Thanks, useful feedback.

The Pioneer BDP-450 is available for around £160, so should do nicely. The lack of smart features won't be a problem.
