Hi goldgenie,

Is your friend using it's sub with the "auto" setting? Theoretically the red light means that the sub has entered it's sleeping state, which I believe kicks in after about 5 minutes of inactivity.

Maybe the sub is having a malfunction and the caused by the lowpass filter control. Which is only working when the unit is connected with the speaker level input.

In case his crossover is determined by setting the settings in his amp, the amp could also be causing it.

Maybe your friend can give some more information on his setup.

Does this happen at loud volume levels only? Or at all levels?

Its possible that the sub is maxing out being fed too much bass info at the 120hz setting at high volume levels, but at a lower(say 80hz) setting, the sub isn't being sent as much upper bass, so should in theory play the lower stuff without cutting out.

If it's anything like my PV1, if it's in 'Auto' mode it'll only "wake up" when it needs to (i.e detects a signal). If, like me, your friend is annoyed at the reaction time it takes to fire up in Auto mode, tell him to just switch it to 'On'.

I leave mine on 'On' 24/7, and apart from an odd problem around last Christmas which seemed to rectify itself, I've had almost 4 years of fault free performance. ;)
