What genres do you think they were best with?

After a lot of listening I finally chose the Senns over the DT880 and Shure SRH840 because they seemed more relaxing to listen too. Tough choice though, ideally I'd have a selection of phones like yourself to suit different moods and genres but can't really justify the expense.

Neither could I but my Mrs keeps telling me they are only dear the day you buy 'em.*smile*

Actually, I thought they were best for the rock I listen to over anything else. I felt they were truly awful for classical and anything that needed to be revealing. One definitive track that I always use is Adele's 'Set Fire To The Rain' as, if you listen carefully, the composition of that track ashould allow you to hear brushes on the snare drum and a piano playing a very quiet harmony. On the T1's for example (and, again, this may be an unfair comparison) I can hear every single nuance in that track, every single one. With the HD650's I really struggled to hear any of it clearly - even compared to the DT990's and Shures. I am assuming that this is the 'veil' or 'darkness' that appears to get referred to a great deal.

YMMV and, as I have said a million times just on this thread, it's peoples ears that are different. There are many out there that would disagree with every word I have written about them and I completely respect that view. They are by no means a bad headphone (how could they be) - there are just others that suit my system and listening tastes more closely.

Cheers Paul, very kind of you to come back so quickly and with such a comprehensive review, I can assure you it is much appreciated sir. Maybe I should try a pair of DT990's as they seem to be cheap as chips at the moment.

No problem at all I am glad you found it of use. I like the DT990's and have always said that they are a great all rounder however, as I guess with the HD650's and despite the Beyers not having their legendary status, they are not to everyone's taste. Stu was a good example of that in this thread however there are many, like me, who love them.

You are right though - if you are after a set then you can grab one for around £100 at the moment I think. Good luck.
