He was the only sporting hero I ever had, and I'll never forget that day. Mrs 12th said 'he's dead, isn't he?' almost straight away. Makes me feel strangely thoughtful even now, and one of life's few regrets is not seeing going to the '93 Donington GP. Like you, I'm not a million miles away.

RIP indeed.

Engines from that era sound like how I imagine the apocalypse might - and apart from the crushingly boring predictability of the sport, it's a big reason why I no longer have ay interest in it.

There's a CD with this, with onboard and offboard sound recordings of some great cars, including the McLaren F1. The V16 BRM sounds evil, and they are good recordings so a good hifi brings them to life:
