AXF - 100 Ultra Smoke, reversed polarity

I tried an SMPS into the AXF 100. The SMPS came with swappable adaptors and I accidently reversed the polarity causing the card to smoke. *dash1*

I am listening to it now and it works OK. What I am asking is, what should I be looking for?

If it works its OK, right?

They said its probable that solder expanded and it caused no damage.

Which is great.

I have been listening to this for a few hours and since it had its own power source the music has been very steady to listen too, beats are more melodic and I can follow the rhythm really well, its not something I'm use to TBH.

When stopping the music its has a very pleasant decay. IMO Its very decent and I'm glad I spent the money.

I spent £28.49 for the Elfidelity AXF-100 Ultra, £19.99 on a Maplin DC 5V 2.2A SMPS for a grand total of £48.48.

I think its essential to isolate the USB signal from the PC's PSU. I have been listening to PC audio for a long time and I've never been more satisfied with my music. *music2*

Cool...maplins stuff is ok! For a while I messed about with different power supplies for my phono stages and dac! I felt there was improvement to gleaned from this..one of my phono amps sounded fab from a better power source, more amps! It sounded great for twenty seconds then blew up. :) I currently use a Maplin psu 13.8volt for my homegrown gadget between iPod and amp..made improvement to imaging, soundstage and volume! It gave me another two watts or so.

I'm sorry to hear it blew up. eBay sells a Linear 5V 2.1A power supply which looks good.

I have no intention of buying though. The Maplin SMPS has solved all my audio niggles.

I have no idea what 'solder expanded' means, and I am pretty sure neither does the guy at Richer Sounds.

If you are lucky, your card had a reverse polarity protection diode on the input, your SMPS current limited, and all you did was cook the polarity protection circuitry.

I think I know..the solder expanded because it wanted to to be a capacitor! Imagine all those long hours just passing current through to the ungrateful diodes..Worse still, they have no conversation! Dull are the diodes..But the capacitor? It's largess and towering statue? It's humility holding onto such power yet no airs or graces! This is what we, the soldiers of the circuit board..look up to! The capacity of hope! This why the solder expanded. :)

All I did, does not sound too good. I don't want to cook anything!

I have looked at the card, no visual clues. I have re-read the splurge for the card, TBH its not clear. It sounds like under current protection, but thats it.

As for the solder expanding, I assume he meant it warmed up and smoked. It looked like solder smoke!

I was born in 1980, so I am 36. The avatar is from a few years ago. I have put on weight since I stopped skating.

I now have high cholesterol, so I am on a serious diet. Maybe I'll look thin again in 8 months or a bit longer.

I will definetly check out Big Bopper, I need a laugh or two.

I'll give some feedback!
