Basically yes, but in many cases it can be deliberate or unavoidable. For instance, an Airport Express doesn't sound as good from its Analogue Output as the best DACs, but it only costs £65 and is tiny. It has a an awful lot of technology packed into a tiny space (RF ends up on the analogue outs) and the digital output is, as shown by Stereophile Magazine (see their website), Bit perfect so it's as good as the best CD transport.

I expect you could buy Dem boards from DAC manufacturers if you asked, but they usually need some sort of power supply, nothing complicated though.

JohnDuncan:On a related note then, why would a CD player have, like, 10 DACs (cf Leema)?

USP? DAC's are pretty cheap so that would'nt make much of a dent in a 2.5k or whatever product but attract a lot of interest from technophobes. I dont know of course and I think Leema points out its a distortion cancelling arrangement (?), just a guess and I heard they sound good though.

I've been trying to find the Wolfson one and I reckon I must have lost it when we moved factory. I'd happily have given it to anyone who was interested. However if you buy one and email us at work, I'm sure Mart will suggest where to get a suitable power supply.

All the others offer them too so it doesn't have to be Wolfson, just pick one you fancy.

Hi Ashley, can you tell me which speaker stands would you recommend with the ADM 9.1's? Tell me if it is more suitable to get metal or high quality wooden stands.

Apollo do the ones on our website and I've got some here if you like the look of them. If not anything 24" or 60 cms you fancy will do. Just email at the office address if you want them. They've got holes in the back for all the cables

JohnDuncan:Ashley James:just pick one you fancy

Because they all sound pretty much the same and it's the implementation that makes the difference?

Yes they do now, all are 24 bit parts and extremely good and not expensive.

So suddenly people stopped posting in this thread? What about the factory visit that What Hifi was going to make?

Like many other threads, it kinda petered out.

asmund:What about the factory visit that What Hifi was going to make?

AFAIK it never happened.

That is a real shame and I personally think Ashley James should have overcome his doubts and supplied you a pair to test in your own time in your facilities. I can see his point of view as well but you can only tell people on forums so much about a product and these days just mentioning AVI is guaranteed to provoke not always entirely positive responses, usually totally unfounded and no doubt often just to jump on the bandwagon I might add. I did mention his 'unusual marketing strategies' which are certainly to part-blame to him recently but he's having none of it, not entirely unexpected and just his way of doing things. So be it.

Still, they seem to do very well and I've heard they are increasing their pro-sector clients as well as domestic customers at an impressive rate, studios and broadcasting companies alike but I would have loved to see them tested with a small, fast sub like the one we used in my place.

Hopefully it will happen at some stage. Imo a lot of people are perhaps missing out on one of 'high ends' great bargains but unless they are willing to travel and audition it will only ever be a small number of people (and some specialist music pro and technology mags) that have heard them extensively making the point for them, and falling on dead ears mostly, at least on this forum.

Ive very recently been offered a relocation to Singapore with my company.

I am selling my current system: Cyrus CD8, DAC-X, Bel Canto S300i and Dynaudio 72SE (plus interconnects and Cyrus Hark stand). From auditions, I cant hear much of a difference (less bottom end perhaps), but the detail, timing and soundstage are all very much there.

My laptop will be my source as I will store all of my cds in the UK. The AVIs save me a great deal, even on 2nd hand vale I receive for the above far outweighs their cost, new!

An AVI trip is still on the wishlist, but what with Awards judging and Show preparation, we haven't yet had chance to sort - we've had no shortage of kit to test or trips to make lately!

Couldn't agree more. I'd love to see the WH-F review.

I'm sure you like and respect the chap and his product, but each to their own and all that?!

There are many companies that take criticism on forums, but most of them still give fairly consumer-friendly responses. The chap that posts for Clearer Audio for example. He seems happy to answer all questions, gives full explanations, and is pretty helpful all-round, even when someone is skeptical. I wouldn't have considered any of their products beforehand, but they now seem like the kind of company I'd like to deal with.

I'd like nothing more for Ashley to come back with a more friendly tone, give WH-F some samples, and sell a ton of speakers off the back of it.

Yes I respect the product and AJ but then I made the effort and went to listen to it (and him), did you? If you did then I respect your comment. If you have'nt then I find it rather odd or as I said in my previous posting, you are probably just one of the people that like to say anything to provoke.

I think you find he was never anything less than friendly or helpful on this forum, as far as I can remember.

*big sigh*!

Nope, he had a suspicious, patronising and defensive attitiude to the mag and its staff, and all sorts of caveats as to how his speakers should be tested.

However, you simply have to plug 'em in and listen to them, preferably with a range of gear and music. Job done. Other than that yes - hes quite helpful and polite; generally a good sort and his speakers might be great.

The fact that you have met him, and he was nice enough to leave you a little star struck, however, doesnt give you some great insight.
