Avatar Bluray problem

I have a relatively new Marantz UD8004 BR player. However, it refuses to play my new "Avatar" BR, and a message pops up on the screen that says my player needs an update . Nor will it play the extra DVD disc that came in the two disc pack.

Marantz Europe do not have any downloadable updates yet for my player, not does it seem that their US site has either.

Could this be a DRM issue I wonder ? Anyone lese experienced this problem ? Thanks.

I've forwarded this thread to Marantz's PRs - let's see what they come back with.

In the meantime, have you contacted your retailer? I know some specialist companies like Marantz have made firmware updates available via dealers in the past.

The Marantz US site shows there was an upgrade released on June 3, the latest of several recently to address various problems. Assuming your player is connected to the internet, run the upgrade procedure and see whether it downloads anything.

One of the points addressed by the previous firmware upgrade, released April 30, is

"During playback particular BD titles made by "Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation", unit will display a picture that promoting update of the firmware, and then the block noise might generate when unit reproduces the main title."

but I'm not too sure what that means in English!

The April 22 release addressed "A red caution might be indicated on screen, and unit might be not replayed at BD title "AVATAR"."

which seems marginally clearer!

Andrew Everard: "During playback particular BD titles made by "Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation", unit will display a picture that promoting update of the firmware, and then the block noise might generate when unit reproduces the main title."

Thanks Andrew and Clare.

Unfortunately my player isn't connected to the internet (!) and my nearest broadband network connection point is about 10 metres away. I guess I could use a 10m ethernet patch lead though ?

I'll also check with my retailer to see if Marantz distribute updates via their dealer network. I'll let you know what happens.

is it possible to download the software update to disc and run the update that way? like the pioneer's.

for the time needed to burn a disc and then do the update the 10mm cable is the easiest option as you WILL need to do it again and again and...

My BD player is wire and has played every dis i have put in it so far. and it is so easy. press ok and leave it to sort its self out.

Thanks for the advice folks....much appreciated.

The ethernet cable connection worked fine (no manual internet connection set up needed, even though this was the first time the player had been connected to the 'net) and the firmware update/ install proceeded with no problems.

The Avatar BR plays OK now.

However, to reply to an earlier post, there seems to be no way of downloading any updates from the website onto a disc nor a USB pen drive (as I have done with other BR players / AV amps). It seems that can only be done automatically with the player connected to the 'net.

Marantz's US site seems to be more helpful too than their European website with regard to the notification of firmware updates - thanks for drawing that part of the US site to my attention Andrew. The European site only offers documentation downloads it seems for the UD8004.

I have been using my UD8004 for quite a few weeks now with both BRs and CDs via it's HDMI connection, and am very pleased with it. Interestingly, I think that it's DACs for analogue CD playback sound better to me than the DACs in my Yamaha AV amp (a test I did using some borrowed interconnects), so I will be buying some good quality analogue audio interconnects soon.

Thanks again.

Hi Russell,

Thanks for your post. Marantz UK is currently looking into your comments and I will get back to you on their behalf ASAP. In the meantime feel free to email me via my contact details on the Andy Giles Associates website.

Thanks,

Murdo

Hi Russell,

Current Marantz thinking is that an online update provides the least complicated and most robust method of updating the machine's software.

On request, though, a disc can be sent to the dealer/customer.

Your points have been passed to Marantz Europe's technical team.

Regards and thanks,

Murdo
