AV Link (HDMI control)

Based upon the glowing reviews, I have acquired an Arcam Movie Solo 5.1. Whilst I am happy with the video & audio performance (which is generally in-line with the reviewers comments), I am stunned to find that it does not support the "AV Link" part of the HDMI specification, and as such does not integrate with the TV. This integration is a very desireable (or even essential) part of the user experience with a Home Cinema system. As nearly all the manufacturers of systems in the £200 -£500 bracket have this AV Link control issue well sorted, one would reasonably expect the premium equipment manufactures to also be on top of this issue.

This lack of integration effectively renders the unit obsolete, such are the advantages in having seamless control of the units. Does this problem only apply to Arcam, or are the other premium manufacturers similarlily behind the curve.

I am dismayed that the reviewers omitted to mention this massive shortfall in their articles.

Any views?

Most products don't have cross-brand support of HDMI CEC, which should be a standard but proves to be anything but, as evidenced by endless 'why won't my TV work with my Blu-ray player' threads on here.

Indeed, HDMI control causes far many more problems than it solves I think (unless you buy a one make separates system which I think is pretty rare). It took me a little while to figure out why I had so many little gremlins in my system as I switched inputs and unexpected things occurred until I realised I'd switched HDMI control on my Onkyo amp on by mistake.

Buy an all-in-one remote like the Logitech Harmony range - much easier solution which, in the main, just works.

mikec99,

It will be little consolation but even CEC control even within a single brand lacks flexibility. It does what the manufacturer thinks it should (if you change the menu language on the TV it will automatically update the AVR. Great!!) but probably not what you want it to. It is an example of technology development out of step with customer requirements. There is significant room for product improvement in this area.

A smart remote may be your answer.
