Hi

This may get asked a lot but I'm not sure how to go about looking for what answer I need. Any how do AV receivers automatically set it self to the recommended movie sound setting kinda like it's own preset. Is their a terminology for this and if not do I need special cables or something.

Depends a lot on the format u r watching. Blu ray or dvd?

Is your bluray player hooked up to your amp via Hdmi or via digital(coax or toslink-optical.)

hdmi on blu ray is the preferred option. This allows dts hd master audio or Dolby tru hd.

Optical or coax will allow either dts or Dolby digital via blu ray or dvd...

What amp and player do you have?? Is it a 5.1 speaker settup you have?

this will help us to tell you how to connect up your home cinema to get the most out of it.

let us know

I bought a yamaha rxa2040 and got a 9.1 set up using Dali Fazons on a 5.1, rear 2 speakers are cambridge audio minx 11 and 2 cieling speakers cambridge audio minx22.

Rather than messing about with the settings i want to use my ps3 for dvd-bluray and netflix and its connected with HDMI so will that do things automatically.

Yes that should do it all automatically.

You may have to select the playstation to output pcm. This will output your hd audio from PS3 over Hdmi.

not sure if your yamaha amp has a mic settup feature?? If it does it will give you a good starting point.. You may have to tell the amp the number of Spkrs you are running..

Hi there.

If you want the amp to change to the correct decoder by itself whether you watch a DVD, BD or Netflix you need to set the PS3 to Bitstream not PCM. PCM means the PS3 will do all the docoding and the amp will ony ever show PCM on the display.

The amp will do a better job decoding udio than the PS3 will.

It's the AV Receivers job to select the correct decoder that's why its the central hub of any multichannel set up. As you have 9.1 I would deffinitly let the AVR do the work and not the PS3 as the PS3 can only do 7.1.

You also need to make sure the AVR is set to source direct or Standard. Not auto surround or anything else. Then it will sellect the decoder correct to the signal it is receiving.

I hope that clear enough

Thank you for the information I will try it all out as soon as I can get my subwoofer working
