While im here ive got a questin for Audiolab CD/CDE player owners.

When i was demoing last year, i think i demoed the CDE, then the CD.

I know this is a fact as read it last nite, it was the buttons on the front (play, stop etc), when you pressed them they didnt do owt, you had to hold each button for a second, audiolab state its to stop accidentally pressing a button by mistake but as i remember the function drove me crazy !!!!

My question is , are both the 8000 CDE and the 8000 CD player both this way???????

cheers dave

Hi Dave,

I have the 8000CDE, but it doesn't do this.

Reggaedave, as a matter of interest, since I have two Audiolab 8000S amps, I was thinking of combining them when I get the opportunity next week. Based on your experience with 8000S and P, would you say bi-amping or pre/power is best?

I know, I know; try it and see...

This is driving me crazy !!!! lol.

In the showroom, on the (CDE/CD), cant remember, if you put a cd in , and tapped play, it wouldnt do owt..

If you pressed and held play for a second, it worked, the same for all the other buttons on the front.

Thats what drove me potty, and thats the reason i didnt buy the player, although i might buy soon, im guna have to demo again...

reggaedave:[Hang on you have two 8000s's ? Two intergrated amps?

Er, yes, I do. I purchased the second for a seperate system, but as things stand there isn't any point in setting the second system up (long story). So I thought about utilising the two together.

can you combine two 8000s 's together ????...mmm

I have my 8000s as a pre...

and my 80000p as a power...

speakers wired from power amp, as Rega RS1,s arent bi-wirable.

If i got a larger speaker, and/or a bi-wirable speaker, i would defo bi-amp them !!!! have tried before with good results..

So that setup would be 8000s set to pre-power (running top end),and the 8000p on power (running the bottom end).

ha, just be careful of the settings knob on both of the amps for gods sake....

Hi ESP2009, I've got an Audiolab 8000a and I vaguely remembered that if you wanted to use it as a pre or power amp there are a couple of internal links you have to break. So assuming the a and s models are fairly similar I guess on the one you're going to use as a power amp you'll need to break these links to isolate the pre amp from the power amp. On the amp you're using as a pre/power you won't need to do any fiddling.

Good luck.

No, the S has a front panel switch enabling the pre and power sections to be completely separated without any internal snippage.

So set the selector to pre-power on both and bi-amp to speakers?...

No, use the 'master' one - the one on which you'll be adjusting the volume, selecting inputs, etc - set as 'pre-power', and the 'slave' one to 'pre-power AV'.

Connect the preouts of the 'master' to the power amp in on the 'slave' - which is now functioning purely as a power amp, and use the two to biamp your speakers.

Yep, that's what I understood. Anyway, I have contacted Audiolab themselves to see what they have to say.

Thanks for the contributions.

Oooo that's a much better idea.

Yeah, talk of 'internal snippage' makes me feel very uncomfortable.

Yeah, looks like my theory of the 8000a being quite like the 8000s was waaayyyyy wide of the mark, Audiolab are making life very easy now, God bless 'em.

Well, 'now', for me was in the 1990s.

This was a feature of the amp way back when, before the TAG McLaren Audio days. Fortunately it's been retained in the most recent IAG-made model.

I bought an Audiolab 8000c and 8000p (british built) and have to say having listend to a Naim and Roksan they are well out preformed by my little babies. Effortless power with a sound that shines so bright I LOVE IT. makes my roksan sound like a midi system.

The Audiolab system at the manchester show was one of my favourite sounding systems. They would definately be on my audition list if i was ever in the market for a new stereo system. Gonna go to the show every year now to keep on top of what i like and what is sounding good to my ears. This year Audiolab are in!! not heard a roksan yet but very envious of you having both!!

Does anyone think IAG will revive the tag mclaren brand. Remember picking up one of my first copies of what hifi mag in my teens and seeing a review of a pre power amp combo and falling in love!! promised myself a brand new set one day but alas they did not survive to be around when funds would be available for a purchase. (funds still aren't available for a purchase but i can still dream)
