Anyone made progress on this? Just bought the TV and very happy with everything except for this, which is annoying. Having the optical out from the TV had simplified my setup quite a lot, as my DAC has only one input I'd previously had to use an optical switch.
Some quick searching brought me to this thread. I've contacted Panasonic customer care but they did not appear to undertstand my description. I'll try their technical support.
My DAC can decode the stream from the TV when using the DVB tuner in the telly, BBC iplayer app, ps3 (via HDMI), appleTV via HDMI, Sky box via HDMI. Perhaps others, the only issue is when running Netflix or Amazon.
I connected an old AV receiver of mine and see both the Netflix app and Amazon apps cause Dolby Digital to be output, not PCM as selected. Netflix allows choice of audio, when selecting std (not 5.1) the AV receiver displays Dolby pro logic but I think it does that for all stereo inputs so I cannot verify what signal is being received, just know it's one my DAC cannot decode.
I've already accidentally started a programs on Netflix while my speakers were on without thinking and got the very loud "machine gun" sound described in the earlier post a few times. If the TV is setup to output PCM then I think it should do that, if somehow that's not possible, it should not output Dolby Digital. No sound would be greatly preferable to what's currently happening.
My ps3 and appleTV both output PCM when running the Netflix app, with or without selecting 2 channel audio.
