I've just invested in a Marantz receiver and I want to try an Atmos setup - I'm aware of the Onkyo speaker option but I'm aware that there are better choices. An in ceiling install is out of the question at the moment so I'm looking for other options for a max of £300 (currently run a basic 5.1 system).

Not sure what the best way o go is, can add 4 speakers or is 2 sufficient?

If in ceilings aren't possible, you have 2 options:

1) Upfiring speakers

2) Bookshelf speakers like MA R90 as front and rear heights (which can also work in Atmos configuration, although I'm not sure how will it sound).

4 speakers are significantly better than 2, but you can always get 2 and add 2 later.

2) Get Monitor Audio

I would suggest you stick to Monitor Audio for consistent sound signature. A radical suggestion: you could buy the in-ceiling or in-wall speakers and make a plywood cabinet to house them. Have the cabinets painted with wall / ceiling colour.
