Atmos help

Hi, I have an AV setup that's around 8 years old: Monitor Audio Silver Series 6G (L&R 300s, a c350 and 2 Silver FX's), paired with a BKE P12-300SB-PR Sub Woofer, a Denon AVC-X3800H, and a 55" LG OLED TV.

I stream all my content - no library of posh 4K Blu-ray DVDs I'm afraid.

I have recently moved house and intend to get the latest 65" LG, and was wondering whether to update the sound by adding some Atmos speakers - I like the idea of getting somebody in to lower the 10ft ceiling and putting in some downward firing speakers, a nice boxed in starlight effect ceiling, and lovely lighting - a real treat!!

But I have to say I really don't know where to start - too many technical questions for which I feel out of my depth!

Should I get matching MA Atmos speakers, or will any brand be OK (subject to matching the matt white finish)?
Will the new 7G go OK with the existing 6G speakers, or should I look to find some second hand 6G speakers?
I have it in my head that the ceiling needs to be lowered as 10ft not good for the sound?
Are Atmos speakers that sit on top of the fronts as good as down-firing speakers from the ceiling?
Should I be installing 2 or 4 Atmos speakers into the setup?
Is my Denon AVC up to the job of adding (up to 4) Atmos speakers and maybe a cheeky second Sub?
Am I overlooking any other key consideration through a position of ignorance?

I could of course simply just bang a new TV on the wall and change nowt else, but it seems such a shame and a potential opportunity wasted, that I feel I ought to at least get a plan and a price together before taking the simpler solution.

Until I get the correct design choices, I can't really progress a solution and move forwards.

Any/all help/guidance would be gratefully welcomed. Thanks, Kevin.

How big is the room overall?

If you decide to lower the ceiling it seems an ideal opportunity to install ceiling speakers for the height channels - MA Ceiling Speakers.

If you don’t decide to lower the ceiling (the ceiling height should not really be an issue as the calibration will take care of that) then I would consider using dedicated speakers on the ceiling rather than the upfiring models as (personally) I find this works better. Monitor Audio Radius 90 match the silver range well.

If you are using 2 rear channels (rather then 4) then I think (but cannot be sure without checking the manual) that the receiver will support 4 height speakers. Typically, depending on the size of the room and seating, 2 would be enough.

The receiver will support up to 4 subs.

Just bear in mind that to really benefit from Atom the rear speakers should be behind the listener and at roughly the same height as the fronts. (I only mention this as users tend to place rear speakers higher when set up in a 5.1 configuration.

Lots of useful info here - https://www.dolby.com/en-gb/about/support/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/

Additionally, given your outlay, it really would be beneficial getting a blu-ray player (does not even have to be 4K at this stage).

A player can be picked up cheap and there are many cheap discs in places like CEX - even if you just get some of your favourite films.

Streaming is good and convenient but the quality (especially sound) on BD is better. 😊
