Just A Thought , with all the talk about the future of 3D and the new dedicated Blu Ray machine for 3D and then the remake of a hole load of films for the 3D experience , aren't we just waisting money knowing that you will end up replacing a hole load more films for the 3D experience? O yes and don't forget about the super HD when that released @ double the resolution it is now within the next couple of years ( i kind of think tech is jumping in front of it's self and the consumer playing catchup )

Yes, you will be wasting your money if you buy the 1st generation 3D products. I understand the PS3 will be 3D compatible by a software update in the future.

Personally, I don't see any need to go for 3D products for a while. When the technology stabilizes & super HD takes off (3D super HD anyone??), then I may invest in a projector. It'll be atleast 5 years for that to happen. Real 3D effect will be on a large screen, which the projector can display.

thats certainly a valid point , but i think its going to be a few years before 3d takes off , if you own a hdtv as many people do , you may as well utilise what it can do , before upgrading to a 3d tv , or what would be the point of having it ??

to be honist i will only replace a handfull of dvds with bluray as and when thay come out(lotr, star wars back to the future)as these are discs that get played a couple of times a year so far ive only replaced rocky boxset and goonies).i may changed some more as the prices drop but i have no plans to really.

i think the same would apply to 3d versions, i would just buy the new ones out

anyway i think its only the displayes that will change i think all the current blu players will be able to spin 3d

Are we wasting our money?? Probably.

The rate at which technology is moving is making me a bit sceptical on jumping on the BD bandwagon. I do have a few films now but for the time being I will be sticking with the PS3 as a source and only really buying films I will watch often.

As far as 3D is concerned I think the recent article in WHF did say you would need a new player. Additionally, as Bigboss has mentioned, I think this technology is more suited to larger TVs and projectors. At least it may lead to me delaying a projector purchase for a while to see what happens. (and having to wear glasses could be annoying)

Still, time will tell. At least if I wait a while to see what happens and nothing else really takes off then BD should at least be a lot cheaper!

For the full benefit of 3D, you'll be needing a very large screen - this won't be provided by the average plasma/LCD screen.

Also, 3D may be fine for animated movies, and movies designed specifically for 3D, but there are many more movies out there that won't benefit from the 3D treatment - French Connection? The Godfather? Zodiac? Rendition? None of these movies will benefit from 3D, and I doubt many people would rush out to replace many of their 2D BD's if they actually think about each movie on an individual basis and work out whether there's any great benefit.

As already mentioned, it would be a waste of money to but into 3D until it's all settled - 3D has failed to catch on 3 times already. Also, the use of 'huge underwater goggles' doesn't appeal to anyone - and negates any benefit that 3D brings to the table.

i agree , i think the tv makers are just trying to shake up a saturated market , i dont ever see it working unless there is no need for glasses , and thats a long way off , i think the likes of panasonic , who are investing so heavily in 3d , are going to get their fingers burned ...

Saw a BBC news interview recently with some US film industry expert who suggested that 3D will never be fully accepted by consumers until films are made only for 3D release. He said that as long as film producers make films for both 3D and 2D release, it won't work.

I also tend to think that the TV manufacturers want to be in a position to promote a new, better, more exciting format every few years so that they can convince consumers to replace their existing sets with new ones, thereby constantly providing new, more profitable income streams.

But does 3D save mediocre and dull films? I'd rather have interesting and thought provoking films in 2D rather than tat in 3D.

Fair point, well made, David!

The voice of reason! The only films that will lend themselves to 3D will be Hollywood generated "action" blockbusters that are inane and all style over substance. Some animated flicks like Toy Story could be the exception. The majority of films will simply not benefit from the 3D technology process.

Good to see someone still recognising The French Connection. It was released when I was but a babe, but there are few finer films for complexity of plot and suspense, supported by theatre grade acting. I wish those who laud the Hollywood crop equivalents over the last 5 years could be forced to watch FC 1 and 2, to see how the modern counterparts pale into comparative insignificance in quality of Directing, screenwriting and performance.
