My old Arcam CD72 has started occasionally skipping, quite often on the first track of a CD. Does anyone out there know what causes this and what the cost to repair it might be?

open it up and give the laser lens a gentle clean with some soft material ie a cotton bud or similar
if that doesnt fix the problem you may have to replace the drive assembly which is a sony one i think but a call to arcam should help on that and they may even have spares

It could be that the laser guide rail is scrunged up. I had this problem yrs ago and put the sticky mass that was cleaned off down to smoking tailor mades.
