Hi

My Arcam AVR-250 made a loud pop/phut sound. It still powers on but then switches itself off.

I looked inside hoping there would be a fuse to change. All I can see is what appears to be an exploded capacitor ??

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I had (and have) an arcam AVR250 that stopped working - turned on and hung, but WOULD work on stereo direct (i.e. not digital processing) - turned out I needed to have a new DSP board, which cost me £230 (ouch) for the repair by Arcam. So - one question: does your AVR250 work (long enough) to see if it works with the stereo direct option enabled - if so, then I'm afraid it's your DSP board.

However, when they returned my amp (repaired) it had exactly your symptoms: turned off and pretty much turned off immediately. Went straight back and they were very apologetic - turned out a fly lead had worked loose in transit from Arcam to me - caused the problem - fixed and worked AOK (probably still does - though I'm not using it now - must sell it :) )

I would recommend emailing Arcam, they're very friendly and helpful (or have always been with me), but might take a while for them to come back to you.

To be fair, the loud "phut" does sound like a cap may have blown. However, might be worth checking if you can fire up the amp without anything connected (speakers, CD player, etc.) just in case it is something else causing the problen...
