hi all,

just after any opinions on a brand new set up(cd,amp, speakers) with a budget of 1k,have the cash burning a hole in my pocket and very tight on time to demo.

any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hi Rockywebb.
What are the rough dimensions of your room and what type of music do you listen to?
Do you lean towards floorstanding speakers or stand mounts?

Cheers
Stevie

Yes, agreed, we need to know this before we bestow our fine knowledge upon you!

Welcome by the way.

with £1k .... this is what I would buy (all older used equipment):

Pioneer A400 amp ... approx £160

Marantz CD63 MKII K1 signature CDP ... approx £130

Mission 753 speakers (not the Freedom model) ... approx £250

Silver High Breed Interconnect ... approx £40

used Van den Hul speaker cable ... approx £40

you will have a decent system and there will be approx £460 left from your budget to connect your pc to Spotify and your HIFI .... and there will still be change to buy a few cases of wine a a few cd's

I don't think you will find any system (new) for your £1000 budget that will better that

Hi Stevie and co,

dimensions are 3.5mtrs by 5mtrs in which is something like a conservatory but with 3 solid walls and glass to the front with a ceiling height of approx 2.8mtrs,wooden floor. a large settee and minimal other furniture.

speakers would pref be shelf mount, and musical taste is varied, rock, reggae, dance, and mainstream, not really classical and anything alternative.

thanks for the replys all advice is gratefully taken

forgot to mention that id like to buy all new and not really 2nd hand for the simple reason of lack of time to source goods willy nilly

Concur with Dim_Span - nice system ! But if it has to be "new", how about;

Audio T - Pioneer A-A9-J amp ex-dem £350

Audio T - Focal Chorus 705V speakers ex-dem £250

Vickers HiFi - Marantz SA7001 SACD CD Player ex-dem £295

Chord Crimson interconnect £30 or so

Speaker Cable - allow £6 per metre

Stands (much better than a bookshelf if you have the room) - £50 or so

Total cost roughly...£1,000

Enjoy !

experience has taught me that sometimes, it's best to take your time when deciding on hifi ... especially if you are planning to spend £1k ....

An excellent assessment above but if you insist on buying new then I would lean towards the likes of Richer Sounds who frequently offer ridiculously discounted deals.
I agree also that it's best to shop around and take your time and that would be the best course of action.
I would probably go with the B&W 602 S1/S2 or S3 model.
If you are buying new then i personally believe that a NAD amp would be a good place to start as this would meet your musical tastes. I would tend to steer clear of Marantz amplifiers as you may find them too warm.

Superfi have got the NAD C545BEE CDP and the NAD C326BEE integrated amp at c£450 currently.

Top that with some Monitor Audio BR2's, Dali Lektor 2's, Q Acoustic 2010's or the Wharfedale 10.1 speakers I think you'd be doing very well.

The NAD cobo will give you a very good intro into the seperates/audiophile arena with great soundstage, superb/taut bass and detailed midrange/treble.

The speakers mentioned will also give you good depth of bass and superb synergy with the midrenage and trebles. The M/A BR2's and Dali Lektor 2's would suit your taste in music very well indeed IMO.

Speaker stands I'd be looking at the Atacama Nexus 6 or Soundstyle Z2's at a minimum and Chord Carnival Silverscreen/QED Silver Anniversary speaker cable as well as either an Atlas Equator or Chord Crimson interconnect.

I will always highly recommend demo'ing as much as you can but any decent retailer should have a majority of the above in stock.

Let us know how you get on
