Hi all,

As i've perviously said in another post I am a total noob to all this so this forum is a godsend!

Basically im picking up a 37PX80 on sunday and I want to know if theres any equipment I can buy to upscale SD. I currently have basic Sky and also Vrgin through a starview. Im toying with going for SkyHD but to be honest I grudge paying it as I think it still overpriced.

Thanks

Mick

Im going to but it from Richer Sounds, those measurments would be ideal if you could get them, I dont want to go all the way through and find I cant get it home.

professor hat, do all HD tvs automatically upscale, Im currently using a Samsung LE-26R74 and dont notice much in the way of upscaling. Any idea how good a job the PX80 does of this?

It depends on the resolution of the TV. If the TV has more than 576 horizontal lines (which a standard PAL signal has) it has to upscale otherwise the TV programme would appear in a small box in the middle of the screen. So if you have an HD Ready set, this will need to upscale to the TV's native resolution (normally 720 or 768 horizontal lines) and if you have a Full HD set, it needs to upscale it to 1080 horizontal lines. Whether it does this well or not depends on the picture processing circuity being used in the set.
I haven't seen the PX80 but given WHF gave the TV 5 stars, I guess it gives a good / excellent picture for the money it costs.

Height 74cm, width 34cm, length 104cm , weight 32 kilos.Did JL not price match with Richer Sounds.?

I think the panny handles SD pretty well straight from the TV signal and I had a decent Panny LCD (5yrs old) before.I would be interested to see the difference from a Sky box but I am b******d if I am going to join Sky .I am waiting for the Freesat PVRs to come out.

Enjoy- I can't stop tellling the wife how fantastic I think the picture is, but until I get Gardeners World HD on it she will remain unsuitably impressed for the first 30 seconds.( but last Saturday I did put Casino Royale on and after moaning for 5 mins she sat down and waited for Daniel Craig to surface from the water, and then watched till he surfaced again )

Cheers for the measurments Davy. Its been the rave reviews from people such as yourself that have convinced me to buy this set so il post my thoughts on it when I get it.

Professor hat, thanks for explaing that, I know you've probably had to do it a hundred times in these forums and it must be quite frustrating explaining basic things so I apreciate it.

The 37PX80 does an excellent job with SD Freeview channels, you wont need an upscaler for these.

You'll see once it's installed.

I have the pana TH42 PX80 (from same family of tv's, just bigger), and I have a separate freeview box built into a DVD recorder (no upscaler built in). I have used QED component cables to feed the freeview to an onkyo 606 amp, and used its upscaler to send a 1080i picture to the tv via HDMI cables.

And I have to say that the improvement to the picture is considerable!!! EVEN THE WIFE WAS AMAZED!!!! That's some praise, indeed.

Hope that idea helps.....

The other thing i think you can do is plug in the signal to a high end receiver via component, composite or S-video. ÿReceivers such as the Onkyo TX-SR875 use the HQV Reon scaling chip which is supposed to be one of the best scalers around.ÿ

Cheers<pete

I have a new Panny 37LZD85 and no SKY.

My Sony HDD upscales the DVD content to 1080 thru a QED cable also[and an RA mains lead and Tacima mains cleaner as per the recent UG to T.]

Recently found a THX optimizer on my son's Incredibles DVD nd the overall result is stunning[though I cant find where to get the 3D Glasses to optimise the colour]
