Very few comments on this amp - is it not very good? The WHF review is good but nobody seems to mention it on this forum?

Hi Hawkmoon

The A-A6-J is a fine amp however if you are happy to consider discontinued/used equipment than imo Pioneer's original A-400 is significantly better.

Btw, what other components do you use please?

All the best

An other publication (Hifi News & RR i think) did a comparative test between the A9, A6 and A400 some 3 or 4 years ago. If I remember correctly, the old A400, in technical terms did ok but was eclipsed by the other two both technically and in a subsequent listening test. Their opinion only of course.

I heard some of their products in the Pioneer Suite at Bristol a couple of years ago and thought it was impressive. I think it was the A9 and matching cdp. The expensive pioneer speakers surely helped too.

Hi Rick - I am using an Arcam CD 73T as source, and KEF iQ5SE speakers. My current (and old 1990s) amp is a trusty Kenwood 3020SE.

Hi drummerman

I remember that review however i still believe the A-400 is a significantly better amplifier.

That may well be the case. The last time I properly heard an A-400 was when I had a Trichord Genesis. I settled on an audio innovation valve amplifier but would be at loss to describe the pioneer after all that time.

Hi Hawkmoon

If you are happy with the KA-3020SE than i would hold on to it. If you wish to change then Pioneer's A-400 or even Rotel's RA-1062 are the ones to consider as both will be a worthwhile upgrade over the KA-3020SE.

All the best

Thanks Rick - reading between the lines it sounds like you think the A-A6J would not be an improvement on my KA3020SE ?

If I look at a used a400 is there anything I should watch out for - I seem to remember reading that some internal component in the a400 had a tendency to wear out over tine ?

As can happen with any old amplifier.
