My Rega 3 [ an old one ] has developed a hum.... perhaps it likes the tunes I play ..but.. it is annoying even if it is way in the background.

It is quite a low hum and the earthing wire is connected and it hums whichever headshell is plugged in with different cartridges. Anyone got any idea where it is likely to emanate from, it wasn't there when I bought the deck 10 years ago

bit late to send it back I suppose..

A ten year old Rega 3 will have neither earthing lead nor pluggable headshells.

The last Rega 3 with a detachable headshell was just before the RB300 arm came out in 1983.

Sounds to me like it is about time for a service maybe? (Possibly about 20 years overdue.)

..... yes it is the S armed one, do you think it might be a motor problem then? I suppose I should service the thing..... also have to repair the Rotel amp I was about to use instead of my Denon, got it out of the loft.. plugged it in and a channel was dead,, grrrrr still sounded nice in mono though..I have a tame electronics engineer, not sure if he will go near a deck though.

Cheers, Steve.

Just been reading up on humming Rega [ and other decks of similar design ] decks, apparently it is often caused by the motor in proximity to the cartridge and the thing does hum more at the end of the record than the beginning.

There was some discussion about issolating the motor [ electromagnetically ] , but no more than a discussion.. Do you think a layer of foil stuck to the bottom of the glass platter might help? Or of course on top of the area of the motor..

Also is a cork mat helpful in reducing static build up? I am fed up with the mat sticking to the vinyl, I have an anti static gun but it doesn't always kill the static enough..

cheers..
