I have one of these Animal side tables http://www.grahamandgreen.co.uk/animal-side-table and am contemplating buying another and using the pair as speaker stands. Will this be bad for overall sound quality? Is there anything I can do to improve sound e.g. add spikes?

Or would I be better off just buying normal speaker stands.

Normally a more solid material is used and I suspect that these might result in loose bass and muddiness depending on how solid they are. I don't think spikes, etc. would be much help. Then again it might be worth it for the aesthetic.

OK thanks for the response, I think I'm siding with proper stands and just put something else on the bear. I'll be forever regretting it.

You could start a business selling them on as speaker stands. I would suggest at least £1,000 a pair and you would need marketing literature which emphasises the need for burn-in and orientating them correctly. You would need to claim that they improve bass, soundstage, and imaging with corroboration from your wife / girlfriend starting that they make a "night and day difference". You might get rich!
