I have a Marantz PM6002 stereo amplifier. I am looking for a budget speaker. Which speaker will go well with my current amp? Also can you please suggest me a CD player to go with that?

Do forgive me for answering this question because it was not directed at me, but the Wharfedales are a clear mile ahead of the Mordaunt-Shorts: A much better, more defined sound; less brightness to the treble and more extention. That said, they are getting a little long in the tooth these days, and rivals such as the KEF IQ10s are probably better.

As for a CD player, the matching Marantz for your amplifier is a good choice, or the various entry-level models from NAD are good.

Thanks for your reply bro.

I had auditioned the CD6002 but felt it was a bit bright specially when paired with the PM6002.

The problem with the NAD is that it's not available in my town. Will have to get it shipped from another city with the extra charges which would then end up being expensive.

By the way, did you also feel the same problem with the Marantz. Although heard a brand new peice - hope that was not the reason for it?

I didn't find it that bright, but I'm used to studio systems which are incredibly bright in comparison to home hi-fi.

Here's the NAD I like for sale at hifix, but Superfi have it for sale too.

Also try the NAD C515 BEE, 5* CD player, available from most online retailers for £149.99; Weymouth Hifi have it for £139 plus free delivery to UK addresses and Richer Sounds (if there's one near you) will price match andgive you a tenner, making it a bargain £129!

I think you would find the 902is too bright given what you have said about the CD6002. I'd go for the Diamonds in this instance. If you can stretch your budget the Monitor Audio BR2s would be worth auditioning too. Astonishingly good speakers for their price.

The BR2 will a bit expensive for me.

What if i use a different CD player (other that the Marantz). Can't get the NAD as i am not from Europe so the above mentioned sites will not help. How about using a cambridge product with the Marantz amp? Don't want to get their CD player as it cannot play mp3 or wma files. How's there 540D DVD player? It has got pretty decent reviews for its sonic excellence. I can also play my movies through it then.

Rohit:

I guess you are from India. Get a cdp from CA or NAD, basic models, if you find CD6002 and PM6002 to be bright. Diamond 9.1 is a great BS, if you like your music to be warm, they won't dissapoint you till the last penny.

PM6002+CD5002+9.1 (or) PM6002+Oppo 980H+9.1

Y'see, I'd go for the Mordaunt-Shorts in this case. Nice, well-balanced, detailed and unpretentious budget speakers - you won't go wrong with them.

Thank you guys for your reply.

I might go with the 902i as i am getting it at a considerably cheaper price compared to the 9.1.

Andrew, does the 902i play better with the Marantz PM6002 or the Cambridge 540A v2.

I guess popular opinion is that it is too bright for the CA.

Which is a better amp for the 902i - Mararntz or CA?

As Andrew said, CA and MS are from the same stable, have heard MS 902i with CA 340 combo, excellent synergy, stunning SQ. Having said that, MS goes well with Marantz combo too, very warm indeed. Oh, MS are never bright for CA products, period; yes, if you pair MS with something like Yahama or Pioneer, might sound bright.

Since you already have PM6002, get a cdp from CA and pair it with MS - your stereo search is over.

I think the 902is will work well with either amplifier, but I'd probably go for the Marantz.

I have a similar problem with the same above mentioned products.

I have already bought the 902i, already have the 540D DVD player. Don't have the budget to buy a CD player so my 540D will have to double up as a CD player as well.

I am really confused between the PM6002 & 540A v2.

Although most people online have suggested the PM6002 but the dealers here are suggesting the 540A v2. The demo that i took here does not give a clear picture as the demo room were totally different for both the amps. So not getting a clear picture. I'll quickly tell you about my room a little bit as i didn't mention it earlier, so might be easier to suggest.

Its a 10*10 ft room. Complete wooden flooring. Got false ceiling done. My cupboard is inside one of the walls (which covers 3/4th of the wall) and i have got fabric mounted on the front side of the cupboard doors (to help from the acoustics point). The rest of the walls are completely bare. Planning to get a bookshelf on one of the walls. Have a 6*3 ft bed, a 5*2 ft rug, a couple of floor cushion & blinds on the only widow in the room. I personally feel that its a bit bright sounding at the moment. Although the bookshelf might help. Also the rack for the system is still to come.

Andrew (or anyone else), please suggest me which amp to go for - PM6002 or CA 540A v2, with my 902i & 540D. Also can't get a home demo, that's why all the confusion. This is the last time i am asking. Please suggest.

Rohit, do tell me what you bought & how does it sound.

Thank you all for your patience.
