Amplifier volume reading

Why do some amps display the volume as a negative value for example -65 -50 and so on -30 for example being very loud

It's supposed to be the attenuation (in decibels) based on 0dB being just the signal passed straight from source to power amplification.

But dare I suggest some manufacturers do it because it looks more 'technical'?

Thanks. And yes I agree because my onkyo txsr606 shows the volume in positives.

I also changed my 875 from the out-of-the-box -db reading to the plain ol' 0 - 100 scale.

Much more sensible.
