Hi.I use AKG 450`s and 451`s but they are suited more for on the go.I have heard a friends beyers and they sounded good but lacked in volume.I havent heard the AKG 550`s and was wondering what others thought. Have you any alternative recommendations in the same price range.I might look down the second hand road on ebay.Thanks once again

I had the Beyers (80ohm version) on a PC-based DAC/headphone amp system and they were way too quiet. Shame really as I liked the sound. I've not heard the 550s but you will hear they are lacking in bass and a bit thin.

I've now got Wesc Chambers RZA Premiums and love them for home listening. Superb sound through my Aune X1 DAC.

Both headphones are in the mid-200s, either dollars or pounds. Personally, I believe the Beyer Custom One Pro is much better than the peaky and somewhat strident DT770. Going up from the COP, my favorite is a beautiful, perfectly balanced B&O H6. Most headphones between the mid-200s and the H6 price have serious defects for high fidelity listening, but the COP and H6 are very smooth and detailed, with no rough edges. The COP is warmer and darker, but the H6 beats it easily in low bass extension and detail.

...simple advice: try and audition both. I have the AKG550, bought them on the basis of reviews only and everything that is posted on the forums is correct. Would give them 10/10, but for the light bass( to My requirements anyway..), so call it a slighlty disappointed 8/10..

Hi.I auditioned the AKG`s this weekend and found exactly the same light in the bass dept I also listened to the Sennhieser Momentums which I found very good and also listened to the new NAD`s which were expensive but the sound and build quality were both excellent.Any thoughts.Thanks again

I've found the Momentum On-Ear (MOE) to be a much better headphone than the Momentum, for several reasons: Although the MOE's treble is recessed, it's very even and smooth and with an iTunes-equivalent treble boost, becomes excellent. The Momentum treble is uneven and cannot thus be corrected. The mids of each headphones are good, but where the Momentum bass is also uneven, slightly bloated in the upper bass and weak in the lower bass, the MOE has a smooth, even and extended bass that's strong (but not too strong) all the way down. I got the MOE mailed from the U.K. to South Carolina USA more than 6 weeks ago, and I love every aspect of it whether used outdoors or in. I have a wide variety of music, some of it 96k 24 bit downloads, and those played with a good DAC/amp sound great on the MOE.

The K550 and DT770 seem to hover around £140. You'd be hard pressed to get either the HD600 or HD650 for that money so I'd be curious if you have any lilnks for that? IMO both of these Sennheisers are far superior to either the DT770 or K550 so this seems fair. The HD600 seems the most balanced tonally speaking, whereas the HD650 is a little warmer, more boomy, but still quite flat and both amp really well. Compared to the other two the Sennheisers have much less annoying / inconsistant treble, while still being very enjoyable. There is good reason why these headphones hold their value, so if you find some for under £200 it's an absolute bargain!

i got my 650's for £190 on ebay about 6 months ago and they were in perfect condition. I did make a bit of an assumption that the 600's would go for less but I have not actually looked. I find with e-bay you just have to be patient.

Just had a look on e-bay completed listings and some hd600 went for £165 recently. The hd650 seem to go for very varied prices from just under £200 to £300. Best to set up a saved search for them and every now and again people put up buy it now's for around £200.

Hi.I would like to thank everyone who posted repliies.I ended up buying DT770 model but went for the 80 Ohm version which after reading reviews said that they would work better with portable devices.I mostly use my Ipod or Ipad for listening.They arrived this morning and I am chuffed to bits with them and they are on the side now playing to themselves and burning in.Thanks once again. :cheers:
