What is to be gained with this update that you couldn't already do with the DS Audio app I.E stream any tune from your NAS via an Ipod Touch// via an Apple tv2 to your HiFi?

I could be wrong but from my research (limited) I think you previously had to have a PC running iTunes to get music to an Airport express/TV even if the music was stored on a NAS.

The old 'iTunes server' support on some NAS was just marketing - you always had to run iTunes somewhere and therefore have a PC switched on. Now I believe Airplay finally allows a setup consisting of just a NAS and an Airport Express / TV feeding your amp and controlled by iPhone / iTouch.

I hope somebody more knowledgeable will jump in as if I am correct I will be in the market for a Synology NAS so the PC can be switched off.

Yes, someone please acknowledge that the new firmware for Synology will make it possible to stream directly from at Synology to an Airport Express, controlling it with iPod/iPhone/iPad.

Would looooove to be able to switch of my MacBook when listening to music :)

Preferably as ALAC (Apple Lossless)

That's what I had hoped for when I found out that Airplay was being Beta tested some months back, but I would expect to be able to "see" the NAS in the my computers menu on the Apple TV2 which I cannot??

From what I understand, you can setup - in the DS - the Airplay function to stream to ex. your Apple TV or Airport Express. You can only choose one unit to stream to. This means you don't have to stream it through the iPad, but can use the iPad for what ever when streaming music. Big difference i my opinion.

AirPlay support provides an alternative way to conveniently stream multimedia content stored on Audio Station. Users can switch to the Media Renderer mode on Audio Station, and play music on any AirPlay devices. With DS audio, iOS and Android devices can also be used for streaming music to any AirPlay compatible products.

According to a "Specialist" on the Synology forum on Media streaming this was not the purpose of the update, you cannot get an Apple TV2 to see the NAS unless it is Jailbroken and running the XBMC.

Yes, but the point is that you could achive everything you can now before this update, just with the DS Audio App I.E. Select music with your iPhone/Touch with the App over WiFi selecting music from your NAS and sending it via WiFi to an Apple TV2 (or just to your device) conected to your Amp via Optical.

The issue has never been for the NAS to see the Apple TV2 but that the Apple TV2 cannot see the NAS as a stand alone drive from which your could stream music/movies via iTunes and not Audio Station, control it with the Apple TV2 remote without the need for an iPhone/Touch device to control it.

From what I understand, before Synology introduced the Airplay firmware you could only stream through the ipod/ipad/iphone where as now you can control the music playing but don't need to stream it through the device as Synology streams directly to the Apple Tv or Airport Express. Thats a major big difference in my world.
