Hello chaps!

I have just bought myself a quad 33 paired with 2 JR149 speakers, the quad has recently been refurbished by quad and the speakers are in good nick!

I will be using my laptop to play my music threw. I am wondering if you guys could give me some advice with the set up and wiring as I am a bit of a novice.

I Currently have my laptop plugged into “Radio 2” port (5 pin din) going to a RAC phono thengoing into a 3.5mm jack converter then into my laptop.

I am getting massive earth interference when the laptop is plugged in, with my old sound system I removed the earth from the amp plug socket ( I know this is very naughty !!) I really love my quad so I don’t want to that this time.

I have found on the net that “ground loop isolator” is the
cure? Are there any other suggestions that will be cheap (as I am a student lameo) but not hinder the sound quality ?

Also the speaker wiring and connections to the back of the power amp are, at the moment very crude.

What gauge/type wiring do you guys recommend ?

And what kit do I need to remove the earth problem ?

Thanks a lot Oli

Cracking speakers, I have a pair myself

I'm using Chord Rumour - I didn't want anything bulky, and most people used to just use bell wire with them, so i went with the Rumour. It's small enough to still fit through the hole into the base.

I'm really surprised that no other company has produced a speaker with this sort of cabinet design since the 149's......

Yes they are lovely! and yes I agree why not ?? they look amazing!! Like most JR149's tho mine has suffered from UV damage so it has no foam! Do you have any on yours? if so were is best to get some? they look even better with it i think !

Have yours got leather on the top or just wood finish ?

oli

You can get the foam wrap around on everyone's favourite auction site - mine didn't come with them when I bought them. I'm not keen on the leather inset ones, I prefer the standard wood finish, although I might try staining mine black, or see if I can get some new top and bottom bits made up to stain black and preserve the original ones. After seeing some on ebay recently which had black acrylic as top and bottom plates, I'm tempted to see if Michell can rustle me up some, as they looked quite smart, and modern!

Yer i know the ones your on about, the special edition ones that were on ebay a few weeks ago they looked even better! I looked at the wire you recomended think ill be getting some of that soon.

What do you power your JR149's threw then? quad? and do you have trouble with laptop earthing (humming noise when the power cable is plugged into the laptop).

ps do you know were to get the stands for the JR149s ? they look really nice when stood up

The guy on the 'bay that sells the foam also makes his own stands - round base, single round column - they look really nice, and he reckons they're quite heavy.

I don't stream any music from pc/laptop, I only run a Sonos system and a CD player. The JR149's are secondary speakers really, a bit of a 'nostalgia' thing, but they still sound better than many speakers below £1k!
