We are looking to buy a new TV and the choice out there is quite bewildering.

We are looking for a 40"/42" size, HD ready TV, with decent onboard sound as we won't be bothering with the home cinema route.

Our budget is going to be in the £700/£800 mark.

For this price range can I expect to find much difference between the makes? I think Samsung look dead smart but someone else has recommended LG. Also, Plasma or LCD? What is the difference?

When going out to the shops this weekend is there any advice or suggestions you can give to assist in our choice.

Thanks in advance.

your not going to get great sound from any tv at that price , with samsung tvs being the weakest sonically , the panasonic 42g10 plasma is very good , full hd , also freesat , £715 at richer sounds , great value ,id also check out the philips 42pfl7404 and sony 40w5500 lcds ..

if the sound on either isnt good enough for you a soundbar could be an option , it could sit just below the tv , they are quite compact with no wires lying around like 5.1 systems , a decent one would probably cost £300 ish though , maybe add one at a later date ?
