Hello all,

I am thinking of replacing my old Yamaha 5.1 receiver and Sony SA-VE705 (first Pascal-series) speakerset.

Based on searching the web and reading reviews I am thinking about buying the Yamaha RX-V673, it has all the options I am looking for (except for Spotify integration maybe) and it has enough HDMI inputs to accomodate my current and future devices.

One of the main issues I have with the current setup is the way music sounds, it has no real depth and it is all very 'bright'. It all sounds flat (I am not able to put it any different than this). For movies it is OK but also not that great also. No matter how I tweak the settings on the receiver or the sub.

My room is about 4m * 5m so not that big, there is no room for large speakers. Also my wife would not like that :)

I would like to spend about the same amount of money on the new speakers as the Yamaha receiver costs, which is around 450 euro's (approx. 350 GBP).

What type of speakerset would people here recommend? I know that listening to the speakerset hooked up to the receiver is the best way to go, but here in the Netherlands it gets more and more difficult to find a dealer that has these options available.

So I would like to know what would be a good starting point and see if I can listen to these combinations at a retailer.

Thanks for your replies.

My own experiences with a small satellite setup (logitech Z5500) boiled down to the satellites being incapable of producing decent midrange and zero bass frequencies. Yes that is partly due to everything below 100hz going to the sub but trying to coax a fuller sound from 3 inch driver is more akin to banging your head against a brick wall.

My solution was to replace the fronts and centre with my old B&W 601S3's and an ebay sourced HTM62. The difference is immense. When funds allow I will make further changes but for the time being it is a far more satisfying system not just in surround but especially with music.

So if your budget can stretch, I think it's worth having a look at a matching set of fronts and a centre and then when funds allow, replace the rest.

I am not sure i wish to go that way. I'd rather replace everything in on go.

does anybody have any experience with the Wharfedale DX-1HCP speakerset, if possible in combination with the Yamaha rx-v673 receiver? My wifes likes te look of these speakers which, you all probably know, is also very important ;)

I am using Yamaha RX-V773 with Boston Accoutics Soundware XS SE 5.1 Speaker Package using Cambridge Audio Symphony 400 speaker cables. The speakers are small enough to fit in the room size that you have mentioned. And the cost of the speaker package should be around GBP250.
