Active Speakers

Hi all,
So we've just moved house and the wife says there isn't room for my stereo system and I need something smaller.

What I would like is: a pair of small active speakers, about 100W RMS each, they don't have to be amazing quality, as long as it isn't terrible.
They will mainly be used for running music from mp3 players, the TV, and hopefully wireless streaming from my PC somehow (can this work via my wireless router?). Depending on the speakers recommended I may also want a small ish subwoofer that can run from these speakers.
Can you get active speakers with more than 1 input so I don't have to keep pulling cables in and out?

I have up to £500.

Please help, I've spent hours looking online and keep changing my mind!

If it helps, I've currently got a Yamaha AX-496 amp and Yamaha yst-SW50 sub, with 80W Tannoy speakers.

Thanks!

Hello,

I suggest you have a look at the Audioengine range and Epoz Aktimates range. As an alternative, and one I'm thinking of getting myself, is Q Acoustics TV2. This has several inputs (not switchable though, so you just have to make sure only one source is playing at a time).

Hey,

You absolutely have to check out the Adam ARTist 5!

I heard them in a very big room on a hifi show and they were playing directly of a laptop.

They sounded amazing! They had 2 setups and I just could'nt believe it were those small speakers that were filling the big room with a sound so hifi.

I was stunned!

the 5s are a fair way above budget at £800, the artist 3 is nearer budget at £600 - prices are from Bartletts hifi. good looking products though, the slim floorstander looks very nice.

Roland DS7, Yamaha HS80, Quad 11L Actives, from £250-500.

Keep your HiFi and part ex the wife!

Bet she's found places for all *her* stuff hasn't she.

Sorry that wasn't particularly helpful.

If space is so limited that you will be listening at very close distance, maybe also consider studio monitors. Some highly respected active monitors within your budget, but they probably won't have the multiple inputs you require.

Thanks guys, that's great. I'll check out the various options and run them past the boss!

Cheers

Just googled these speakers and came accross this web site and price.

Sounds like a bargain to me, never seen the site before so could be too good to be true?

Thomann's are fine. Quite long established I think. The only caveat to buying and importing would be the possibility of an additional bill for VAT from the Customs when they get to the UK side.

there's no additional VAT on purchases within EU. you only pay what is charged by the seller, regardles of country they trade in and where they send purchased goods.

Indeed there will no be aditional VAT but that's the price for 1 speaker.

Maybe you should try the ARTist 3? Considering you got a rather small room.

My pc monitor speakers(Alesis m1Active320USB) are only 10 watt's and I have to turn down my master volume in my pc to 30% otherwise they are much too loud!

That's good to knoe - cheers oldric. I must bear that in mind. Only slight issue then is one of ongoing support, no UK warranty or just the hassle of having to return in the event of a problem.

yeah, you're right about this one. but there's a simple way to overcome this problem. you just need to buy stuff that you'll unlikely be forced to use your warranty rights. so, no hassle with sending equipment there and back again all over Europe. I have a feeling that ADAM speakers tick that box nicely. I definitely wouldn't hesitate to buy them outside of my country if it was financially viable.

although they do extend the warranty to 3 years. same with my dac, 1 year warranty from everyone except thomann, although for me i decided on 1 year and a more local supplier in case of a problem.
