On my Onkyo and Tannoy 7.1 system, CDs sound amazingly clear and holographic using Audyssey (calibrated with care and fine tuned after) then listening with All Channel Stereo.
Of course, hard to say for sure but I don't remember being this impressed for any but the tens of thousands of pounds systems at the what hifi show in Bristol earlier this year.
At the very least, it suits my ears and I don't think spending the same amount on a stereo only system would have sounded better.
In reality I assembled the gear 7 years ago for SACD listening. Now that's bang for your buck. Close your eyes and the performers are in my home theatre room.
