Am i right in saying you'd have your normal 5.1 surround but with moving your two fronts out a bit and then adding a good pair of tall stereo speakers for the dialog in films..... giving you a top set of dedicated stereo speakers for music?

If this is the case i really like the idea of that.

About to spend some money upgrading to either Monitor Audio R90, KEF's 2005 or the MT30's.

Then the AMP is again undecided as i like the Onkyo sr607 due to the amount of HDMI but the denon 1910 seems to have better reveiws?????

Any suggestions

Could you then move the two fronts to the rear ( if they were matching sat speakers say) then add two hoofing stereo speakers at the front for best results????

Yes, and then it would give you best results.

For example if you look at the back of a blu ray disc like Narnia Pince Caspain it is 7.1 dts master audio soundtrack so all your speaker's would all be working.

If you require any more help it would be my pleasure to help.

All your.... nah, stuff it, it's Christmas after all, I'll let that one go this time...

It's a Xmas miracle,

But seriously speaking 7.1 is 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer.

Has anyone tried a 7.1 encoded disc with front height speakers instead of the recommended set up as per Big Boss's diagram (using Pro Logic IIz) ? Haven't got a 7.1 BD yet, but Hellboy 2 is in the post and wondered how PLIIz would cope.

Is it possible to get the 7.1 effect with two rear speakers in the ceiling?

There are a few discs with 7.1 soundtracks - as the rear effects normally add ambience, I would imagine that ceiling mounted speakers would work well. I have my surrounds and back surrounds mounted high on the walls.

You certainly couldn't play a genuine 7.1 soundtrack with front presence speakers as the extra two channels are supposed to be at the back! However, if you're playing a 5.1 soundtrack you could elect to play it with Pliiz processing, thereby adding the front presence speakers, whereas someone with a 7.1 speaker layout would use Pliix processing to bring the back surrounds into play.

Dolby Prologic IIz is a bit of a gimmick really. Not many discs are encoded in the format. If you want those front height speakers, then you should go for a 9.1 speaker setup. I'll prefer a 7.1 setup rather than a 5.1 with 2 front height speakers.

Thanks Sorreltiger; yes that was my understanding but just wondered if had been tried and whether it ended up as a sonic mess. My instinct is therefore to turn off the front height speakers for 7.1 soundtracks or choose the non HD codec . Hopefully there won't be many 7.1 discs released !

In addition to the usual surround left and right? Yes, and should work well.

Mind you, so should two ceiling speakers for 5.1 surround duties, as these speakers tend to produce a fairly diffuse soundfield, so should give a good spread of sound appearing to come from behind you.

Errr, that isn't what I was talking about!

beater:Is it ok to have my rear speakers on stands and add some back surrounds up high.

Yup - oh, and modded your signature, too...

the_lhc, I know it wasn't mate the two comments were separate.

Interesting, I feel a project coming on
