It's been asked before, but i still can't be sure on this so I'm asking again... If you play a BluRay on PS3 it decodes the audio signal and sends it to the Onkyo 606. So, the 606 doesn't display the HD sound input thing as it isn't decoding the signal. As you don't choose the decode setting, what is the setting I need to use to get the HD sound? There are so many modes I am confused... I just want the HD DTS/DD to be used and wish the Onkyo would just default to it! Which "mode" should I use to just let it deal with the incoming HD audio and send it as it is received to my 5:1 set up? Cheers

Yes....I have a similar problem!
Set up I have my PS3 connected to my 606 via HDMI. I have an HDMI from my 606 to my Kuro. Fine. My PS3 is set to stream Linear PCM. This means that my PS3 is decoding the HD Audio. Cool. I have used to auto setup routine on the 606 to setup the the speaker levels, etc and all seems well.
Issue I bung in The Incredibles into the PS3. Using the Movie button on my remote, I select DVD PL X Movie on the 606. So, I would now expect the 606 to take the LPCM stream and do whatever it does to create surround sound, right?
From The incredibles menu, I select Setup and then THX optimiser option. I go for the Audio test. The speaker positioning results are:
Left...................OK
Centre.............OK
Right................OK
Surr Right.......Nothing from the Surr Right....the sound comes out of my Right
Surr Backs.....Cos I have 5.1 the sound should come out of my Surr Right and Surr Left. It actually comes out of my Centre!
Surr Left..........Nothing from the Surr Left....the sound comes out of my Left
Subwoofer..... Total silence

Clearly, my understanding is missing some vital piece of information. I do get sound coming out of the Surr L & R during the movie but as far as I can tell, its the same that's coming out of the fronts.......not the surround sound experience I was expecting.

with not knowing if everything is in the right place - is it just with the ps3 that you are having trouble or is that your only source? I once had a problem with a 7.1 Sony where i accidently wired the rears up as the extra 2 speakers in a 7.1 and not as rears.

Also you want the 606 to output 'multichannel' as its listening mode. The PS3 decodes the HD sound internally and outputs it as multichannel PCM.

The PS3 is my only source (other than my Humax which doesn't do surround sound).

Either the PS3 and 606 are thinner on the ground than I thought or I have not expressed my issue correctly!

Thanks Strodo... I think you finally answered my question! The Onk instructions are a pain, I can't even find multichannel mode in them!
I take it if I set the onk sound setting to multichannel, using a PS3 blu ray (and video setting to "through") I will get full DTS//DD HD sound on my speakers (and 24fps on my tv)?
Cheers

And if the PS3 is sending out 5:1 DTS HD already, wont "Pure Audio" be the best setting??? Confusing myself more by thinking about this!

Errr, the PS3 can only send out LPCM. It does the decoding.
Pure audio makes the 606 use the left and right speakers only. [EDIT] This is wrong! It can do mutlichannel according to the manual. Seems this is more about minimising noise sources eg amp display.
The instructions show the various modes you can select and indicates which speakers it will drive when that mode is selected.

Thanks, although like other posters, I seem to be completely lost by the modes! Like I said, I can find no reference to multichannel mode in any language I speak! I'm sure it is easy when you know how!

In the Onkyo menu: Find 'listening mode preset', select whatever input source you have your PS3 as i.e. DVD, Game/TV etc., The signal format selection menu appears - find Multichannel PCM and then select 'multichannel' as the listening mode...............job done

Just tried that. The listening mode preset for DVD (my PS3 input) does not have Multichannel PCM as a listening mode....or am I looking in the wrong place?
I'd be really grateful for a step by step response.

that was a step by step response. You're not looking at the menus hard enough.

thanks! done.... now may I be so bold as to ask what to use when my PS3 is playing a game (eg GTA4, COD4). Same? Or do I have to change the PS3 and/or Onk's settings? Thanks for your patience Strodo !

OK, so I went into the Listening Mode Preset screen. I selected "DVD" - my PS3 input.
There are a number of items listed...
Analog/PCM
Dolby Digital
Etc
For the Analog/PCM, I selected Pure Audio.
Returning to my THX optimiser (this time I used Finding Nemo), I ran the tests. I still get the results I originally posted.
For your convenience I will restate them:

SpeakerResult
LeftOK
CentreOK
RightOK
Surround RightSound comes out of Right
Surround BacksSound should come out of Surround Left and Right with a 5.1 setup. Sound actually comes out of Centre
Surround LeftSound comes out of Left
SubwooferTotal silence

So I try Direct and PLII Movie modes (both multichannel I believe) and the results are the same.
Should I assume that all is well and the THX optimser is wrong?
Have to say that this is hacking me off big time!

SAP7 - Cool, you do not have to change any settings now. The multichannel listening mode is for DVD,BR, Games, the lot!

PJPro - You are not looking hard enough!!!!!
There are TWO pages on the listening mode screen in the Onkyo menu. Continue to the second one (scroll down) there you will find 'Multichannel PCM' set this to multichannel. Leave all other listening modes as 'last valid'.
BTW forget your THX optimizer, the Onkyos automatic equalizer calibration should sort all this out for you providing you set it up using the mike in the first place.

Hmmmmm. Actually, I'm not done. Strodo... I think you may be quoting from a 605, not a 606?! Multichannel is only available on the 606 if you have a dvd connected up via multichannel cables.
I have just tried your instructions and they are not right. You seem to have to set one of the "listening modes" and all of them are altered by the amp. There seems to be no default mode to play the LPCM input through. I can't get by the Neo/PLii etc modes!!! Thias must be so easy, but I'm not getting it! I CANT get it to show "multichannel" as it should do... why?!!!!

Effectively, my PS3 is outputting correctly (I have checked) but my Onkyo will only use one of the listening modes, and I can't get out of them! I have seen countless posts saying the Onk should say multichannel, but mine doesn't and I'm stuck with corrupting the signal into one of the stereo/TD?Neo/etc. eq settings. How do you get out of them! I've set the thing to multi in the listening modes... yet it makes no difference! I put my Onk into "pure audio" as I knew it was wrong, switched on my PS3 and it stayed in pure audio! I'm soooooooooo confused!

OK. I've done that. Sorry, I didn't realise that there were more options down the page....the top of the list only cam halfway down the screen so I didn't knownthere were more to choose from.
Anyway, rerun the the tests and got the same result.
What should I see in on the amp display? I currently see PCM (small text), HDMI (small text), DVD PLII Movie(large text) and DD PLII (small text).
Is this right?

Strodo - applied your settings as specified. However, I am not convinced they are right!
It appears tht the 606 is not recognising that the PS3 is putting out multichannel PCM....so the multichannel mode against that source type is never used. It only appears to be registering the Analogue/PCM source and applying whatever setting is specified against this.

Same with me. "Multi " set as the default for Multichannel PCM. Yet, when I turn on my PS3 outputting DTS HD MA in LPCM my Onkyo deals with it and only gives me the options like "stereo/Neo/TD/all channel stereo" etc. These are all versions modified 2 channel sound. It will NOT let me select any mode that resembles multi. We can't both be wrong here, so someone must know what on earth we are doing wrong?! If anyone can point to the instruction page where it shows how the Onkyo should be when dealing with LPCM DTS high def input, please enlighten me! I have a hdmi stuck in "dvd" and I can't get out of the 5 or so set audio modes... NONE of which are letting my LPCM signal hit my speakers as true HD sound!

I dont know if this is of any help but the 605 I have has all the sound settings on the onscreen menu also, when playing a blue ray through my ps3 the sound always seems to come out "Multichannel 5.1" automaticaly, is this correct....?
