Hello,

I got myself an older Sony STR-DG820 AV receiver which I am trying to get to work with my 5.1 speakers system. I am not very knowledgable in this area and my hope is that someone can shed a bit of light on my issue.

I have a simple setup:

TV ---- hdmi ---- STRDG820 ---- hdmi ---- Roku/PC/CableTVbox

In STR-DG820 setup, i've configured:

Speakers as 3/2.1

Distance to speakers: measured and set distances manually

Speakers crossover frequency: left at 120Hz as i am not sure what that is

HDMI: AMP

Surround (Sound Field Selection): thats where i am struggling

My selections are: A.F.D Auto, E.Surround (C.ST.EX A/B/C, V.Multi Dim), Multi Stereo

Reading around different forums, A.F.D Auto is recommended but there isn't a definitive "Yes, this is what you should use for typical 5.1 scenarios" type of answer. I consider my setup to be typical, nothing out of the ordinary.

My guess is that CableTVBox should be outputting stereo sound and only FL, C and FR speakers engaged? and Roku, PC will feed 5.1 to all speakers?

All guidance is appreciated:)

Thanks,

A bit of an update.

I set my Surround - Sound Field -> A.F.D Auto

Now when i play TV shows from my Cable tv box, its playing surround sound great,

But Roku only plays to L and R and Sub ... and Roku is set to "Surround" in Audio settings.

I use Mediabrowser to play on Roku. The file i tried playing has TrueHD audio so if Roku is passing sound through and AMP detecting the source properly with A.F.D and decoding it, I should really hear surround, but i do not.

i dont no the roku but pretty sure the issue is with it,is there an option to output bitstream which means the amp is doing the decoding and will show true hd or dts hd on its display,if the display is showing pcm then your source is doing the decoding.

Thanks, unfortunately Roku only has the Audio selections : Stereo and Surround, I cannot select bitstreaming. I will try using Netflix and report back.

Also,

What should I be selecting for "Enhanced Surround Mode"?

My selections are: PLII, PLIIx, Neo6 Cin, Neo6 Mus, Neutral-THX.

as per menual, PLII is the only one that does 5 channels, all others 7 channels. I am assuming because i have a 5.1 setup, i will not benefit from anything but PLII ?

Thank you!
