If I get an a/v amp and then attach 2 front speakers - Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's (so I will also get good stereo music playback on cd's) and then attach 2 rear speakers will most modern a/v amp's cleverly and magically adapt to this and put the centre channel through the front two speakers and the (suitable) lo-frequency sounds to the woofers of the front two speakers?

Should do yes, you won't get quite the steering of the audio that you get with a full 5.1, but it will definitely work. Make sure you tell the amp the front two are large speakers and the back two are small speakers. Is there any reason why you're not putting a centre in?
