My advice would be to get a cheap 1080p tv to tide you over for a few years untill oled and 4K become affordable, i would recommend the samsung 55H6400 or WAIT untill summer and purchase a 4K oled tv.

From my experience of both LCD and plasma the pros and cons are:

plasma - great blacks - LCD not as good

plasma - great viewing angles - LCD not as good

plasma - colours are as equal as LCD if you can find a good qaulity second hand plasma with a transferable waranty on an auction site. 2013 model latest panasonic vt65/ GT. The pre 2013 pannys have lots of issues including image retention, banding and reliabilty. If you can pick up a kuro but then you are risking it without any warranty. In fact, purchasing any second hand tv is a risk any way but until OLED is more established, for me it's worth a risk because it is all relative.

I'm not a fan of the LG plasma in particular the remaining ones at currys although you will have a warranty and I think you would be better off with a good qaulity LCD such as a Samsung, Sony or panasonic for a new Tv.

I'm very pro plasma and I have a VT65 calibrated in my front room and 46pz panny plasma in the bedroom with the latter 7 years old, has better blacks than LCD and this what is important to me more than anything, is deep inky blacks.

This is my opinion and hope this helps in some way..

Plasmas inherently don't suffer from backlight issues as every pixel is self emitting. Blacks are deeper for this very reason.

Amongst LED lit LCDs, I found Samsung to have the most uniformly backlit screen.

JD if you can get to John Lewis Milton Keynes they have an used Samsung plasma for £800 and comes with a 5 year warranty, this TV is just as good as the Panasonic plasmas. The code is 518500. It is 51 inches. Cracking TV and I have checked it out it is all good.

Except on my much-maligned but beloved LG 60PZ950T plasma in the kitchen, which is perfect in every way except for its even, but only quite moderate, black levels.

Pioneer Kuro PDP-LX5090 for only £450, in Stoke, here on AVForums http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR6.TRC1.A0.H0.Xfreeview+hd+box.TRS0&_nkw=freeview+hd+box&_sacat=0 or more specifically, this Manhattan HD box at John Lewis http://www.johnlewis.com/manhattan-plaza-hd-t2-smart-freeview-hd-digital-receiver/p1535174#tabinfo-ratings . From using (eBay-bought) Humax Freeview HD boxes on both my Pioneer plasmas, I can verify that the HD channels from the Humax boxes come through bright and clear on the plasmas.

No question about excellent, at one time world-leading, black levels on the Pioneer PDP-LX5090, one of which I have (if Strapped for Cash is still with us!) in the front bedroom!

Mr Duncan, I'm delighted to see you back on the forum after almost two months. Have you been able to buy a television now, and if so, which one?

Keys to flat - check!

Just been round for first time since I saw it (weeks ago) and did rough measurents of the place the TV will go, and 55" seems viable.

Purchase is therefore imminent! Recommendations for 55", 1080p, flat not curved...go!

Be aware that having seen the Sony 8, which is what, £750 quid, I'd be hard pushed to justify any more, though would consider a bit more if you can offer a justification. I'm quite tempted by the equivalent Panasonic because of passive 3d, which for the rare occasions I think I'd use it feels more practical than the active of the Sony (unless I've mistaken the spec).

£700 for the Sony and you get a free sound bar:

In John Lewis today they had a new Sony 55-inch TV for £719 (I think) and you get a free sound bar. I would check out the new models too. If you can get to John Lewis Milton Keynes they had an ex-display Panasonic 58 808 4K for £1050! The 4K picture looked good.

2nd option is Samsung UE55H6400. I wouldn't get too hung up on active vs passive unless you're planning to watch a lot of 3D.
Both these models are starting to go out of stock though so if you want one be quick.

I chickened out of the 55" in the end after getting the tape measure out and got the 50" Sony. I should get it up and running tomorrow (BDP-450 also procured today, along with kettle and toaster) for first impressions.

Congrats on the TV and Pioneer.
