anyone tried it? just two fronts and a sub powered by a stereo amp via optical, whats it like? is dialogue still good without a dedicated centre? does hd sound from blu-rays still sound good? how do front panning effects sound? would the sub help with dialogue as is apparently the case with the avi neutron 2.1 set-up?

It's OK if the sound is loud enough. With soft volume, I often feel like there's a 'whole' in the middle....

I don't care for surround, but I think a 3.1 solution would be great. Haven't found a way to add a centre channel to a 2.1 setup though.

Not many stereo amps have optical inputs...And you wont get HD audio via optical!

..of course, but i could get dolby digital, through coax?Optical can carry DD/DTS, but a stereo amp(with digital inputs) almost certainly wont support those formats. You'd have to set your source(s) to downmix/output stereo/PCM...

thanks dave/fahnsen, im just toying with the idea, less boxes/clutter..though im unsure if i can live without hd 5.1 surround sound for movies, the avi neutron 2.1 set-up would probably be the best bet seeing as its got built in amplification, dac, and digital/optical inputs, but its pricey...

i had my first taste of standmounts in my room at the weekend and i really liked the different sound, i found them very open and an easier listen, albeit with alot less bass/presence.. my rx6's can be a little overpowering at times, when im in the mood thats great, but im thinking a nice pair of standmounts may be a better all round bet, perhaps eb2's.

im currently running a pair of tweeny mission 760i's from my stereo amp connected to my avr, ive also got my sub running from the avr so no centre or rears, just 2.1 movie sound. the crossover frequency is set to 100 and its surprisingly good, dialogue is fine and the bass is very good

i need the volume turned up higher than usual, and having the avr set to 7 channel enhancer lends a bit more weight to things, but its certainly very enjoyable and much much better than the tv's speakers, it should sound even better once my dynaudios replace the missions.. a dynaudio centre is e500

, so i think ill stay with this kind of set-up
