People sometimes buy expensive stuff because:
1. They can
2. To flaunt
3. To feel good about themself
4. Believe in the brand
5. Social status
Its not all the time because one cable is better than the other. Similar to watches. A Casio will still give accurate time as a Patek but its the social status that pushes people who can afford it, to buy them. Same goes with a 16k cable.
